Thunderbolt Kills Two Men On Des Moines River Farm

Sunday lightning strike during a 12 30 am thunder storm on Lot Fisher farm eight miles northeast of Rolfe killed Clarence Gluve age 23 and Edward Holschow 26. L J Cluve son of Ottosen banker and a farm hand were reported among the dead. another man survived with a shock. The storm damaged silos bins barns and crops, with trees broken and wind damage widespread. Mrs Holschow aided by hysteria remained indoors. Holschow recently moved from Tennessee.

Absconder From Sergeant Bluff Embezzles Township Funds

Geo E Prescott of Sergeant Bluff, owner of a general store, reportedly absconded with 2700 in Woodbury Township funds. Trustees filed civil action in district court to recover the money. a warrant for embezzlement was issued. Prescott disappeared June 10 and is described as a pioneer resident of Sergeant Bluffs.

Woman Fatally Struck By Scaffolding Accident

Mrs. A D Grow, housekeeper for Ed Griggs near Emmetsburg, was struck on the head by a plank dislodged from scaffolding around a First National Bank Building renovation during a circus parade. She remained unconscious and died Friday after being carried to Mrs. Ilith Smith’s home and treated by a physician. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church with Rev. J F Brereton officiating. Woman's Relief Corps and Friday Club members attended.

Oldfield Sets Two Mile World Record in Des Moines

Barney Oldfield ran two miles in 70 4 5 seconds at Des Moines on a mile track to beat world records. He competed against De Lloyd Thompson, who featured a biplane exhibition of aerial warfare. The track was built with 2x4 scantling framing and the outer embankment rose twelve to eighteen feet above the inner edge.

Robert Lents fell about forty feet from the top of the art building at Dodge High School Saturday evening. He sustained a broken hip a broken jaw and two fractures in an arm and is reported in serious condition.

Strike Settled After Gravel Pit Standstill

A Wednesday gravel pit strike near town halted work for about two hours as John Melroy refused to release the Rock Island company train until payment due under contract was received. Officials from Estherville mediated and Melroy agreed to release the tracks after payment, threatening another tie-up if terms were not met. payment was reportedly received and operations resumed.
