Obituary notes the death of Mrs. Arthur G. Baker of Vernon township at noon Tuesday from heart failure after giving birth to twin boys earlier that morning. She, a devout church member, leaves husband and six children aged up to 15. Funeral at M. E. church in Emmeetaburg Friday at 2 p.m.
At the Rock Island station in Iowa City a pickpocket accused by Nellie Cochrane of a “rare and distinguished look” took half her shoulders and stole her gold watch from a pocket with a red ribbon. Nellie later identified the same man and retrieved the watch from his pocket.
Notice outlines 1915 effective date July 4 for new rules. Dams must have fishways per Mish god Game Warden plans. Prohibitions include illegal nets or devices for fish: seizure possible and fines up to $5. Size limits listed for catfish bass trout ten inches, pike pickerel twelve inches, gar eight inches. Enforcement extends to possession and prosecution of violators.
Stolen from the Hill and Fleming hardware store Wednesday night a thief pried open a rear window and took ten to twelve dollars from the cash register leaving only an aluminum chip. Entry involved breaking glass and climbing via the top sash. A bloodhound from Lakefield aided none, with no clue to the culprit.
The Algona Courier reports Grant township in Kossuth county Iowa has completed its Central school building. Prof. A Sifert may teach in the county next year. The four department plant includes a normal training and domestic science, with artesian water and a modern septic system. The six acre site hosts a superintendent house and janitor quarters, stage transport for students from Swen City and Ledyard, and hot air furnace heating. The project will be watched by neighboring townships eyeing similar moves.
Fred for Lessing Road R Ponalya of Hampton was arrested Saturday charged with leaving a township road south of Chapin in such condition as to render the highway impassable. Red rotors had been used on the stretch, and the gain stopped the work at the point which converted the highway into a mud hole.
Crowds gather for the second annual Chautauqua program led by Thurlow Lieurance All American Band. The afternoon featured La Boheme selections and Lieurance’s Indian music stories and arrangements. Rain and muddy grounds dampened parts of the venue, but interest was strong and the week’s lineup remains promising.
County Attorney Nurey from Spirit Lake conducted the preliminary hearing in the state of nwa versus W H Bradley for assault and battery with intent to inflict great bodily harm on Himesrics. The incident occurred Saturday night near the drug store after a skating rink visit. Bradley allegedly struck Kries with a brick, then drew a knife, but Elmer Zenor and others intervened. Kries sustained a temple wound and a coat sleeve cut. Bradley was bound over to the grand jury or to be sent to Spirit Lake for sentencing after pleading guilty when bail proved impossible. A large water tank used by the M. & St. L. at Mampton toppled after supports failed, crashing onto a box car. The tank fell southeast, and parts of the derrick and signaling equipment were damaged. No injuries reported. area strewn with wreckage at the station.
J W Coverdale of Iowa State College reports alfalfa thrives on sandy soils along the Mississippi near Burlington. Early trials began in 1992 with sands improved by lime and manure. fall sowing and catch crops recommended. Several fields now yield over a ton of hay, and older plots improve with experience.
Aurora paper notes a widow, Mrs. Shultz Seaton, survives a Cavern death of George Shultz and then loses her second husband Fred Seaton four years later. Both men died at same times of day four years apart, in separate incidents involving railroad crossing accidents near Shabbona and Montgomery.
A report by the Interstate Commerce Commission about the Rock Island case is described as sensational and profitable for its authors. The account alleges hundreds of millions in profits extracted through manipulation begun in 1802. It claims a long pattern of public harm and widespread financial manipulation benefiting insiders.
Kentuckians Pierce and Thompson quarrelled with Ottosen residents over recent fights. At a restaurant Pierce shot and killed Lars Gabrielson, Severt Nelson, and Pierces assailant, dying instantly after a knife attack. Gabrielson was killed at Ottosen. Thompson was arrested next day on a farm cart.
A Webster City visitor reports Hampton’s strict traffic enforcement. The mayor launched a law enforcement drive. prominent residents were fined heavily, with penalties rising to one hundred dollars. Speeding is said to be crushed and road laws observed. The mayor’s brother-in-law was sentenced to thirty days for intoxication in city court.

Lightning struck the large bare on W J McCarty farm in Rush Lake township early Wednesday, destroying the barn. Mr. Wm Martin’s horses were safe, but the loss included harness, a wagon, 200 bushels of corn, hay, and other barn contents. Insurance covered some grain and barn protection, but not full value. Reporter.
A narrow escape occurred Wednesday on the Hyd er road as Mrs Prd Johnson and a companion named Myr faced a perilous incident while driving toward Devesford. Both occupants avoided serious harm and were reportedly shaken but unharmed.
An Iowa State extension note argues against late deep cultivation of corn. Three Illinois tests over seven years show scraping weeds yields far more than deep cultivation, suggesting no final deep cultivation and root damage from overly deep tillage. Also reports a vacation trip by Morling and Stillman families planning a three week lake region camping visit in Minnesota with three autos.
Spencer citizens form a local rifle club with government support offered to towns with ten or more young men. The program provides a Krag-Jorgenson rifle at about $5 and 120 rounds. Members must be over sixteen and not subject to military enlistment. Inspectors will visit periodically.
A Dorcis Society shower was held Wednesday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Joe Amdahl for Mr and Mrs Martin Christer sen. About 50 guests attended enjoying games and amusements. A lawn luncheon with Japanese lanterns followed and many gifts were presented.
A. R. Moore of Cesar Rapids confirms rumors of his candidacy for lieutenant governor. He says newspapers announced the bid earlier than planned and he is not yet ready to campaign but will allow friends to prepare to boost his effort when the time comes.
Equipment for the Dows High School physical laboratory and dome science department arrived this week. By September first the school will be thoroughly equipped to reach the new branches prohibited by the law.
