An adjourned meeting of the local Red Cross society at the Hawkeye theater discussed affiliating with the Red Cross or remaining independent. A report was due July 9, with a plan to await a fuller committee report. A correction regarding a previous Palo Alto Red Cross note was provided by Mrs. E J Mitchell.
Frank Sullivan son of Mr and Mrs T Sullivan of Graettinger has enlisted in the U S Army and is training at Fort William H Harrison in Helena Montana He previously worked for the Great Northern Railway and served as agent at Hambur North Dakota His younger brother William Sullivan is with the regulars at Fort Miley California.
Will Hutchings Dead J C Molison, clerk of the Woodman lodge, received a letter Tuesday stating the death of W. G. Hutchings at Kana Saskatchewan Wednesday afternoon July 4. He died of apoplexy after a warm day and evening chores. Funeral particulars not given. He held a $2,000 lodge policy and survivors are offered sympathy.
The city orders all weeds on vacant lots and parking areas mowed within ten days from June 12 1917. If ignored, the city will perform the work and charge the property owners. Frank Schurmann serves as mayor. The statement warns neighbors who question motives are often watching.
The report lists cows producing over 45 pounds of butterfat or 1000 pounds of milk in 80 days ending June 30 1917. It names owners such as G E Moore Ludwig Larson John Larson and J L McDonald with farm data, milk and fat yields, and dates. The document notes farmers in Wallingford are keen on dairying and gaining practical experience through the association.
A crowd attended the Graettinger area sale of a quarter-section farm held by Referee J. M. Walden. Johnson & Odson bought the farm at 133 dollars per acre after a tie prize split among T. Hendricksen and Wilbur Holroyd. The sale praised for its satisfactory result and few improvements. The Lost Island creamery opened July 1 with Oscar Suss delivering the first can and John Rierson delivering the last. The old creamery had served 28 years with brief shutdowns for repairs and new machinery.
A wartime letter from William Sullivan of Graettinger Iowa dated June 26 1917 from Fort Miley California describes infantry and artillery drills mess duties and punishments plus mail from home. He notes friends from Graettinger and Fort Scott and mentions an upcoming Fourth of July celebration and a hike to the Golden Gate.
Leo Christianson writes from Fort Ruger Honolulu Hawaii May 27 1917 describing arrival after eight days sea travel. He notes hot days cool nights scenic Japanese houses and parks Africans and many Iowa comrades. He requests Times newspapers ha son Harold Rousch at another fort and mentions sending a ship photo and 200 German sailors. He expects to stay awhile and closes with greetings to all.
In Emmetsburg Judge Coyle held a special session to review the heirs of Thomas O'Connor of Walnut township and set aside the referee E. J. Mitchell's 240 acre farm sale to Dr. D. E. Kulp at 100 dollars per acre from June 18. The petition valued the farm at 125 per acre and sought a cash-value sale. Thomas O'Connor represented heirs. Davidson & Burt represented the estate. the matter drew attention for its large sum.
A large crowd gathered at Lewis Olds in Jack Creek township for a Fourth of July picnic with lemonade and ice cream funded by a collection. The event raised $13.06 for the Red Cross and featured a baseball game where married men beat single men 20109, described as a pleasant summer observance.
