The Junior Chautauqua featured a Saturday Wennie roast at the school grounds and daily noon council meetings. A Sunday night play Good Fairy Thrift impressed with roles including George and Martha Washington Will Spend and Uncle Sam. Town officers included Mayor Ervin Miller and Clerk Arline Myhre with Carl Spies and Thomas Sullivan among organizers awaiting next year.

Crops Fail in North Dakota Reported by Thos Galleger
Thos Galleger of Dogden North Dakota arrived Sunday for a brief visit with his parents at Emmetsburg. He is brother in law to Mrs J J Sullivan of this place and formerly worked at the Rock Island depot here. He now serves as agent for the Soo at Dogden and reports crops in his vicinity burned out by heat and drought. Wheat in that area is perhaps half a crop though conditions are not uniform across the northwest.

City council debates sewerage system amid objections
At a Monday meeting city officials established a sewerage district and ordered bids for sewer construction. Objections from about 90 residents were noted, with concerns over water supply and the need to extend existing mains. The council amended and passed the resolution, while some residents threaten legal action if further steps proceed.

Two Graettinger Boys Join Iowa Guards for Training
Floyd Fleming and Marshall Sleason of Graettinger volunteered for the Iowa Guards and will depart in August for Deming New Mexico for training as truck drivers for the Iowa Train. They expect to accompany guardsmen to France if drafted, bringing Graettinger’s total to 27 in Uncle Sam’s forces as the community wishes them a safe and honorable return.

Death of prominent Wallingford lady
Mrs. P. P. Wolden died after a brief two week illness, leaving ten children and fourteen grandchildren. Born February 13 1845 in Norway, she immigrated in 1867, lived in Filmore and Emmet counties before settling in High Lake township. Her long pioneer life was marked by family devotion and community aid. The Times offers sympathy to the family.

He recalls birthday reminders and a parade with steer roping times of 47 and 20 seconds. He notes no news from Ray or Harold, lack of newspapers, and rumors Troop E may harvest in Colorado for pay.

Independent Society organises first chapter in state
A meeting at the opera house Monday evening formed an Independent Society. A committee was sent to Emmetsburg to report that night. West Bend secured the state’s first independent chapter and plans were made to organize here. Mayor Schurmann and J A Suss went to Des Moines to obtain a charter. The minutes of the first meeting are published. a second meeting report was not provided.

Minutes of July 16 1917 Red Cross meeting elected Baumgartner
The minutes recount Dr Nane calling the session to order and adoption of prior minutes. Reports from the investigating committee and letters from J B Weaver and National Headquarters were read. Baumgartner elected by acclamation to lead the committee and debates over forming a Red Cross branch or an independent group dominated the meeting. The motion to adjourn passed without second and the secretary was Mrs John O Jertgon. The group adjourned to July 17.

City notices weeds and trees require immediate work
The notice orders that weeds on vacant lots and parking areas be cut at once and that all trees above sidewalks be trimmed to eight feet. Silver wedding tale from Exira trip and Iron Cross story
A Times reporter recalls a trip with Mrs. Paulsen and Clarence Axelton to Extra Iowa for Mrs. Jessen and Mr. Paulsen’s silver wedding. The party faced a mud hole near Ayrshire but reached Exira for a reception with 600 to 700 guests, a china closet gift, and dancing. A German Iron Cross holder in Exira shared wartime bravery, recounting a snow dash to save a wounded officer and his decision to flee to Denmark, aided by the cross.
