Reports show a splendid increase in bank footings at the Emmets bank led by president Charles J. Spies. Footings climbed to over $700,000 since opening four years ago with net earnings totaling about $42,000 added to surplus and undivided profits. Spies serves as cashier at the institution.

Okoboji reported two more drowning deaths Sunday night in Calumet Iowa. H. J. Warm, 66, and Gus Lewinch, 48, both from Calumet, drowned when a collapsible canvas boat capsized as one man stood up. Their bodies were recovered Monday morning.
Graettinger business men met at City Hall to plan the 1938 Labor Day celebration. D E McCarty was named chairman and Max Baumgartner secretary. An executive committee of five plus the two officers will select subcommittees to handle details, aiming for a jubilee event. This will be Graettinger’s 87th annual Labor Day.
Wm Crowley, in Graettinger yesterday, reports Jasper Heng drowned in a Minnesota lake on July Fourth. Heng was married, aged about 40 to 45, and had lived in Cylinder locality for years before moving to Minnesota. Further details are not known.
Graettinger kitten ball team defeated Emmetsburg 18 to 7 at Emmetsburg celebration under newly used flood lighting. Sunday they split a double header at Ruthven, beating Ruthven 6 to 2 and losing to Wallingford 6 to 0. Next they host Ruthven Thursday. Manyaska slated to play Hers a week from Sunday.
The Thomas Thoreson farm southwest of Graat tinger will be sold at the Court House in Emmetaburg on Saturday July 8 at an early hour. The sale is an auction to settle the Evelyn Thomson estate, called by order of the District Court. Local creamery burglary and theft reports follow with details.
At a Monday board meeting of the Farmers Creamery Co of Gracblinger Oral Bonstead was hired as operator to succeed Palmer Frettem who resigned to take a similar post in Emmetsburg. Bonstead, longtime employee and capable buttermaker, will assume duties at the start of the month with patron support and board approval.
The regular monthly meeting of the Lost Island Farm Bureau will be held at Center school next Tuesday evening July 1. Local forestry company members Vincent Allen and Norman Chrie llinsen of Gravttinger and other Palo Alto boys, stationed in Winona Minnesota, returned Saturday for an over the fourth visit. A severe storm delayed them Friday night with stops and fallen trees blocking traffic. The group appears pleased with their semi military unit and their reforestation work.
A.C. Christiansen who runs the Sinclair Oil station on the highway is a warm admirer of President Roosevelt. He attended the Sioux City gathering when Roosevelt won the candle date for the presidency and has not wavered in his support. Christiansen previously farmed for years before moving to Graettinger to enter the oil business where he enjoys strong sales and good service.
Hubert Swarner, age 18, died at Arnolds Park after injuries from a fall from a cake of ice from a truck the previous day. He was struck on the pond as the accident occurred on Thursday.
PTA members announce a benefit party to be held Thursday July 20 at the home of Mrs Carl Spies, aiming to raise funds for school activities and community programs. Local residents invited.
Mrs John Hansen 62 died suddenly at her home in Mineapolitan Wisconsin Wednesday evening July 5 about six p m. She had suffered injury last year from steam in a canning incident and broke her hip after slipping from a pressure cooker. She spent months in Coleman hospital before returning home and was improving prior to death. Funeral Friday with services at home at 1 80 p m and at St Pauls Lutheran church at 2 p m. Obituary to follow next week.
On Saturday night a windstorm collapsed the Charley Jensen barn four miles south of Graettinger crushing a fine team of horses. Calves survived after a holes cut in the wall allowed extraction. Earlier hail damaged Mason crops including corn and small grain. Mason, who recently had an appendicitis operation, faced multiple misfortunes, including the loss of his team.
Palmer Frottem, operator of the local creamery, led his scoring team to Mason City where they earned third place in a keen contest. The team missed the top by thirty points, averaging about 94 per store. Participants included P. J. Dous, Elmer Iverson, Ralph Graettinger, H. Dous and Art Clentitaon. Graettinger creasy scoring members received souvenirs and congratulations.
The Aly bert Luke family visited the Times office on the Fourth of July with two six foot corn stalks from their crops. They cultivate thirty acres of corn and own another 100 acre field that was knee high on the holiday. The Lakes family are prominent farmers in northwest Town. J A Sploa & Bon are building a large granary to store 1092 oats as bins on farms must be emptied soon.
Arm athong based Henemeda Motor Co wins Ford agency for Plymet and Dioldnaon models. The business change places the Ford Motor representation with the local dealer, expanding regional motor sales and service in Thiaenaw counties.
The feature film Tarzan the One Man opens at Hawkeye Theatre Graettinger on Saturday July 8 with two shows. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer confirms shipment, priced only for children and adults 10. Spirit of the West to follow next Wednesday.
Lawrence Jensen son of Mr and Mrs Charley Jensen of Grachtinger endured a dramatic wind storm Friday night on West Okoboji as his large sailboat capsized with two youths aboard. Nearby a second boat capsized with three occupants. One boat drifted ashore solo, the other with the three survivors clung to it. Spectators on shore watched anxiously as both boats finally reached shore. A tragedy was averted and all were relieved.
Neighbors and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mason gathered a petition on Monday and raised 273.60 in cash to help them re establish. The couple has faced hardship including an appendicitis operation and hail damaged crops followed by a wind storm that collapsed their barn. The gesture is described as genuine neighborliness, not charity, with funds left at Jensen Hardware and solicitors aiming to include everyone.

A weather system brought rain and hail Friday night into Saturday with strong winds. Graettinger saw wind and rain with minor tree damage. hail damage appeared south and southwest of town Saturday morning, notably at the Charley Jensen and Martin Jensen farms, where oats were shelled and corn affected.
A. P. Thompson of Thompson's Grocery says last Saturday was his store's biggest in years. He advertised a large hat of special prices and noted a huge stock and growing business.
A shipment of 13,000 empty beer barrels arrived from Germany, ordered by American brewers facing a shortage. The move supports production bottlenecks and supply recovery for U.S. breweries.
The Englund farm northeast of Graettinger lost a barn to a Friday night fire after a lightning strike. Mr Englund released his horses and was slightly burned taking harness from the burning barn. The home burned years ago and the property, known locally as the John Mowiltt farm, passed through several occupants amid recent misfortune.
The St Pauls Lutheran Ladies' Aid Society will hold an ice cream social in the J P Wagner building on the north side Saturday July 8. Coffee and lunch will be served along with ice cream. A cordial invitation is extended to all.
Mr and Mrs J T Michael of Emmetsburg marked their 63rd wedding anniversary at home with their daughter Mrs Joe Lyovis and friends offering hearty congratulations. The event followed by a local sale that proved successful despite tough conditions.
