George Smith near Osgood received 1042 dollars for hail damage after rye was destroyed and oats damaged. He had 2000 dollars in crop insurance with the Farmers Mutual Fair Insurance Company of Des Moines. An adjuster from Des Moines settled the claim, deeming rye to yield little and oats at 170 dollars.
A Friday incident in Webster City saw a smooth grafter offer seventy two boxes of corn cure with a smeahow eggers a premum and one year of advertising for twelve dollars. He pockets the money after a deal with a proprietor, is identified by a Clark as a veteran conman, is threatened, returns the money, and leaves town. The case involves a counterfeit corn powder mix.
The Farmers Creamery Co of Wallingford hosted a dairy event last Friday in Strand's Grove attracting a large crowd. Speakers included Francis J. Kennedy Estherville and T A Clark West Bend Assistant State Dairy Commissioner who urged local patronage and sanitary conditions from barn to creamery. Judge W B Quarton Algona spoke on the farmer's role and tariff issues while J S Ester Waterloo reviewed dairy cow qualities and silage needs. A 5 to 2 win for Wallingford over Terris followed the program, with music from Graettinger and kudos to organizers J P Kennedy G T Moore and J C Jenneni.
Republican and Democratic county conventions met in Emmetaburg last Saturday. Republicans chose delegates to the state and congressional conventions in Des Moines on July 16 and named a new county chair, W. H. Morling. Delegates from numerous precincts and wards were listed, with several chairmen and committee members identified. Democrats elected delegates and alternates to the state convention in Council Bluffs on July 28, led by county chairman P. H. Donlon.
Reports describe a freak storm with a deep cleaned old well at the Bevins home, a ten penny hail embedded in a park house, structural damage at the opera house, a buggy tongue protruding into a building, a sixty pound object driven into a post hole at Ed Dagle’s place, and air pressure forcing cesspool contents back into a home, with many splinters and straw fragments found nearby.
Henry Neuman and Nickolas Meurer started for Algona on a motorcycle Tuesday evening. A head on crash occurred several miles east of town with an automobile coming in the opposite direction. Neuman was cut about the head and face, Meurer's ear was badly shaken but not seriously injured. Neuman was brought to town and treated by Dr. Livingston.
The Supreme Court overruled an application for a hearing and sentence modification for Pierce Wilson, who is serving a life term for the killing of Josephine Wilson in Oskaloosa on September 26, 1912. Evidence shows Josephine, Wile aon’s wife, was shot twice with a revolver during a dispute. Wilson then took the gun and fired three more times, causing death. Wilson argued intoxication. the court held intoxication does not excuse the crime.
