Local boys and girls defeated Ruthven in Ringsted and Ruthven events with girls’ games scheduled this week and boys next. An advertising note mentions Charley Jensen selling a variety of hardware items including show cases. a visitor from Emmetsburg and Mr. Price bought Jensen’s show cases.
The annual meeting of the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery association will be held at the Graettinger church on Tuesday March 12 1935 at one p m. Officers for the coming year will be elected and other business acted upon as needed.
Postmaster O'Connor announces baby bonds will be sold at the Graettinger post office starting March 1. Denominations and prices listed include 18.25 for 25 bonds, 37.60 for 60 bonds, and 75 for 100 bonds. Details are available at the post office. Also mentions Graettinger High School boys’ tournament game versus Spirit Lake in Spirit Lake, with last event noted in Graettinger.
Henningsen is improving after a illness that followed a summer period of unwellness. He had been a little under the weather but is now progressing well and expected to regain full strength.
The Graettinger market report notes early 1935 grain and feed values with oats at 2B, corn around 15¢, eggs at 16 cents straight run, and various poultry values. Heavy hens, heavy springs, leghorn hens, and state brand butter prices are listed, including a listed butter price of 6.65.
The Chapman auction near Emmetsburg set records with roan mares selling for 344 dollars a suckling calf 70 dollars a sortel gelding 170 dollars a black mare 170 dollars and a Holstein yearling bull calf 156 dollars. Yearling heifers averaged 75 dollars and the sale total reached 4200 dollars. Grod land & Reeves of Graettinger announced the sale and Charles Spies of the Iowa Trust of Emmetsburg served as clerk.
The girls sectional tournament is set for Ayrshire this Thursday through Saturday with evening games starting at seven. Curlew vs Whittemore opens the slate followed by Dickens vs Ruthven, Cylinder vs Ayrshire, and Graettinger vs Rodman. Graettinger aims to win as locals plan to attend.

H A Elsenbast of Graettinger State Bank noted Gust Carlson had a highly successful hog sale near Emmetsburg last Thursday. The top bid reached 65 dollars, average 45 dollars, with Carlson showing top quality hogs. He recently paid 162.60 for a purebred son sourced at Doerr’s hog sale, signaling Carlson’s rising prominence in Iowa hog business.
A. J. Johnson will hold an auction sale Friday and Saturday March 22 and 28. An immense assortment will be priced for the high dollar. More particulars later.

Emmetsburg Democrat reports on February 15 board actions restoring back pay from May 1933 to January 1 1935 to four county officers and board members while setting 1935 salaries for deputies and clerks in the Court House. Total back pay $3360 with supervisors receiving $1960 and officers $1400.
A fierce late winter blizzard moved through Sunday with high winds and drifting snow. Monday brought open highways but tough driving, especially off main routes, as temperatures dipped to five below zero and radio reports indicated subfreezing readings elsewhere. The northbound morning passenger arrived only by evening.

Milch cows topped at $60 at the S. I Vermie auction sale Monday. All other cattle sold at splendid prices. Attendance was light due to drifted roads and a winter day but Vermie’s sale totalled $1,800.
Verne Trickel trains intensely for a boxing bout with Phil Lips at Spencer on March 65. He is related to Mr. and Mrs. John Drew of Graettinger. Trickel appeared on the Graettinger boxing card last Labor Day. Graettinger friends wish him success in the Spencer match.

Bill Lammers will hold a large auction on Tuesday March 12 starting with a free lunch at noon. The sale includes 16 head of horses 50 head of cattle ten broad sows and a long list of machinery household goods and poultry. Cattle include 20 head of A1 milch cows with milch stock and young cattle in demand. Grod land Reeves manage selling and H A Elsenbast cashier of Graettinger State Bank will clerk.
Hawkeye Theatre will show Lady For A Day on Sunday and Monday March 3 and 4 starring Warren William May Robson and Guy Kibbe. Also on March 1 and 2 The Gay Divorcee with Alice Brady Edward Norton Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Next March 5 and 6 West of the Pecos a thrilling Western. Manager George Frick books all high class pictures.
Vernard Rogers income tax auditor for this Iowa section will be at City Hall Graettinger Saturday March 2 to assist residents with income tax report questions. He will not prepare returns but will answer perplexing points and clarify doubts. He appears in Emmetsburg March 9 15 16 28 29 and Estherville March 4 14 21 22 28.
The sale reversed a prior belief by reporting that Wm. Hermansen purchased the Lena Christensen 140 acre farm last week. Mrs. Lena Barringer acquired a half section near the Wm. Boecker farm, clarifying the real owners.
Wade Sullivan has been named postmaster at Algona. Mrs. Sullivan is a sister of attorney Ed Kelly of Emmetsburg.
E M McNew and Henry DeWall traveled to West Salem Wisconsin for a four hour consignment sale of high grade and pure bred cattle. 175 head were sold with cows averaging about 60 dollars and young heifers 25 to 30 dollars. McNew bought a pure bred animal. En route they avoided a head on collision by veering into a ditch near LaCrosse. no injuries but the car was badly damaged.
Rock Island railroad train No. 19 en route to Sioux Falls was snow bound for 12 hours between Wellsburg and Holland in Grundy county. Huge drifts nearly 15 feet deep blocked the track from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. before section crews freed the train. Normal schedules resumed Monday night as Iowa and other Midwest states recovered from the late February snow storm, which caused at least three deaths and many injuries.
Large attendance at the K. E. Combs auction sale on the Barringer farm east of town. Prices were good and the sale a decided success. A motion picture titled The Shepherd of the Seven Hills was shown at Hawkeye Theatre Thursday evening, drawing a large crowd despite stormy weather, presented under the Catholic Ladies' Aid society.
Bennett Thoreson purchases an interest in Jensen Hardware and will assume management on March 4, forming Our Own Hardware Co. The Jensen operation joins Our Own Hardware buying group, with Thoreson aided by his brother Goodwin. Jensen, in Graettinger, will stay nearby while closing out remaining stock and accounts.
The Hampson family of west of town mourns the death of Bobby Rae, their four year old son, who died at Estherville hospital after curaemic poisoning. He had been ill since yesterday and the funeral will be held at Lost Island Lutheran church Saturday afternoon.
The state J. C. tournament is underway at Fort Dodge this week. Emmetsburg meets Fort Dodge Thursday at 8 30 p.m. with slim chances if they fail to snap their slump. Estherville plays Independence at 10 p.m. tonight. Graettinger fields Edward Sullivan and Joe Grady, both on last year’s county title team.
Representative A. H. Henningsen is home for a ten day vacation from duties at the state capital. The break allows him to meet constituents and discuss legislative matters. With March first moving day in Iowa many lawyers have important private business to finish in late February and early March.
Michael Haag aged 77, known in Graettinger, was quite ill at the start of the week with a lung fever. Local friends hope he regains strength and soon may be about again.
Mass at the Catholic church next Sunday will be 9 a.m. instead of 10 p.m. It is the first Sunday of the month Father McEvoy from Ruthven will hear confessions Saturday afternoon and evening starting at 8 p.m. On the other Sundays in March the mass hour will be at ten o’clock.
