Graettinger Auction Schedule Details Big Closing Out Sale

Graettinger hosts a long list of closing out auctions from February 16 to March 16 led by S.R. Young and others. Horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, machinery, household goods and farm assets will be offered at multiple farm sites, with dates Feb 26 through March 16 and several local residents moving to Graettinger.

Jorgenson Sale Impresses Despite Blizzard

Mr Jorgenson held a sale last Thursday as a blizzard raged yet cattle sold well. A yeasling brought 130 dollars and milch cows sold from 97 to 108 dollars. The sale total reached 5024 dollars and 9 cents. Times bills and advertising drove business despite the blizzard.

Crystal Wedding Bells At Home Party In Huron South Dakota

A crystal wedding celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A Thorsness drew 3865 intimate guests at their home last Monday afternoon. The ceremony featured bride and groom with flower girl Alice Finley and ring bearer William Schmidt. Luncheon followed and guests presented four cut glass pieces as keepsakes.

Last week's Emmetsburg Tribune notes a thousand dollar page ad sold by publisher Miss Donovan who handed the amount to the Red Cross. The piece lauds patriotism and calls for more local Red Cross effort. Also mentioned is a Rio Grande trip excursion where participants invested in land and praised the region. Ruthven Youth Ends Life Over Military Fears

Ruthven 29 year old Albert Sampson lended his life with a 32 revolver Monday after brooding over possible military service. He had been examined by a military board but was not discharged and may be called later. Neighbors were surprised by the rash act. Graettinger youths continue enlisting, Warren Newhall, son of Mr and Mrs TJ Newhall, joined the US army at Sioux City February 9, sent to Ft. Logan with cavalry. Mildred Mahon gives up teaching near T J Slaven place due to poor health, succeeded by Mrs. Matt Buttimore, formerly Miss Genevieve Carney. Mr. Buttimore serves at Camp Dodge. Supt Antone Johnson shows a film The Farmer's Friend from the National Crop Improvement Committee alongside the regular movie on Thursday March 2.

Captain O Connor to Speak at Graettinger Theater

Captain Alfred H. O Connor, who spoke at Graettinger last summer, will give a lecture at the Graaf theater in Estherville Sunday afternoon March 8 under the Defense council. Many Graettinger residents plan to attend. L J Dickinson to lecture at the Graettinger High School Friday evening on Agricultural Needs in War Time. Admission is free. Dickinson is a district candidate opposed to Hon Franks Woods.

In Emmetsburg Iowa on February 16 1918 the Woman's Division of the County Council of Defense endorses Corn and Nut Loaf and Tamale Pie recipes from the County Home Demonstration Agent. The notes explain ingredients methods and serving ideas and invite a reception at the E S George home February 22. A Belgian Relief display features knitted blankets by pupils of Miss Henningsen's room with a list of block contributors.

Lost Island District 8 Basket Sociable Receipts

A basket sociable in Lost Island District No 8 Friday evening raised 65 dollars. Teacher Miss Amy Johnson donated 50 dollars to the Red Cross, leaving 15 dollars for school purposes. Baskets sold for 1 to 4 dollars, and a 20 cent lunch was served for Red Cross funds.

The Rob Roy quartette will give a musical entertainment in Grachingter on the evening of March 7 as the fifth number of the lecture course. It is billed as the best attraction of the course and a packed house is anticipated.

Fuel Administration Order Cuts Night Lighting in Iowa

A Washington telegram to Iowa mayors and plant managers announces a December 15 order from the United States Fuel Administration. Thursday and Sunday nights will be lightless except for essential safety lighting. all outdoor and nonessential signs must be extinguished. Municipalities should enforce the order with police, report violators, and inform local papers. The message includes a wartime protest verse linking fuel shortages to Kaiser policy and YMCA relief.
