Death of Blake McMackin in Fort Madison Prison

Blake McMackin, serving a life term for murder, died in the penitentiary hospital at Fort Madison after an appendicitis operation. He shot and killed Wm. Boblit and Will Laughlin near Emmetsburg on March 1, 1927. Authorities say he worked in the furniture department and had no long illness. Telegrams were sent to his brother William McMackin. Continued on page Hight. Arrived safely in Los Angeles: Mons Christianson and family, Gilbert and Ruth Young, visited the Thompson family. Graettinger folks plan a three month stay. Bert Johnson Arrested Over Christmas Pretense Scheme

Bert Johnson, salesman for a coffee company, was arrested by Constable Wm Blomster for obtaining money under Christmas pretense. He faced charges in St James Minnesota after restitution was made to Swea City buyers. He had earlier been brought to Algona and then released to Minnesota authorities.

West Bend Man Slugged and Robbed Near Dubuque

Archie Pertl, 21, of West Bend Iowa, selling in Davenport, was stopped eight miles south of Dubuque when two highwaymen blocked his car. He fought them and was knocked unconscious, losing $48 and his grips. Passersby found him at the scene and he was taken to Finley hospital in Dubuque, later released. A Lost Nation and Baldwin duo reported aiding him and police were notified.
