Death of Blake McMackin in Fort Madison Prison
Blake McMackin, serving a life term for murder, died in the penitentiary hospital at Fort Madison after an appendicitis operation. He shot and killed Wm. Boblit and Will Laughlin near Emmetsburg on March 1, 1927. Authorities say he worked in the furniture department and had no long illness. Telegrams were sent to his brother William McMackin. West Bend Man Slugged and Robbed Near Dubuque
Archie Pertl, 21, of West Bend Iowa, selling in Davenport, was stopped eight miles south of Dubuque when two highwaymen blocked his car. He fought them and was knocked unconscious, losing $48 and his grips. Passersby found him at the scene and he was taken to Finley hospital in Dubuque, later released.
