A train bound for a Geiiy hospital in San Francisco carried convalescent soldiers from France through Boone on Sunday afternoon. The group, largely slightly wounded, thanked the Salvation Army and Red Cross for aid while expressing concern for longer furlough delays and families awaiting news. A lieutenant led the unit. soldiers were petted by locals and fed in private homes during the journey.
An account from a January 1 gathering at Hawkeye recalls young veterans sharing grim war memories. Stories describe shell bursts, cooties, and close calls, with talk of German and Allied fighting and a mix of education and bravado among the men.

Norman Dale Emerson, wounded in World War I, arrives home in West Bend after thirteen day furlough from Cape May hospital. He underwent a six hour operation on his thigh, lost flesh, and now uses a cane and leg brace. He served since February 6, 1917, sailed October 24, 1917, entered trenches January 16, 1918, was wounded July 21, 1918, and returned to New York mid October. He fought near Chateau Thierry with the First Division and is regarded as the first Palo Alto County soldier to enlist, sail overseas, reach the trenches, go over the top, be wounded, and return from France. A fuller report will appear next issue. The community welcomes him home during the Yuletide season.
