Catalpa Trees Not Suggested For Northern Iowa
G B McDonald of Iowa State College forestry warns that catalpa trees should not be planted in northern Iowa as many groves fail due to severe winters. Osage orange fares poorly too, while cottonwood grows quickly on wasteland and can yield fence posts within five to seven years if treated with preservative. Planting one sixth acre of cottonwoods annually can supply about 200 posts. Also available are plans for a fire proof hollow tile smoke house for farms from the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station.
