Deputy Frank Smith of Spencer was shot and killed by Frank O Clare of Dickens while attempting to arrest him. O Clare then killed himself. Sheriff John Lidman witnessed the incident. O Clare had quarreled with his wife, who fled to her sister’s home. the gunman followed and threatened to kill her. Smith was shot after a struggle as O Clare fired into his chest. Smith leaves a daughter, Olive, 17. O Clare was 30.
