Jail Delivery At Emmetsburg Friday
Five prisoners led by Frank Smith and John Welch escaped from Emmetsburg jail Friday evening after a robbery attempt on George Groves of Atherville. Welch was captured minutes later near the jail. Smith eluded pursuit until Monday when tracked to Getovedan and then Sib. Sheriff and deputies pursued with bloodhounds. Welch restrained by Leland Coonan until officers arrived. Local alarm and pursuit across the Rock Island track led to further manhunts and a series of captures and evasions involving police, railroad workers, and a Superior bank connection.

From Emmetsburg Democrat Monday forenoon sheriff Shea received word that Frank Smith alias Devers, an escaped Estherville prisoner, was captured near Ocheyedan. He described a broken jail escape Friday night, hid in weeds and boxcars, rode freight to Estherville, survived on water, and evaded officers until trail led to his capture by bloodhounds. He is jailed in Garnersburg on a bread and water diet with Welch in a separate cell.
