Early Hatching Boosts Fall and Winter Egg Production
A poultry expert explains that hens molt in late summer, stopping egg laying for three to four months. To maintain steady egg supply, hatch pullets early so they start laying by seven months, with March and April hatchings favored north of the Ohio River. Government data show pullets averaging 20 percent egg production, up to 35 percent in some pens, yielding about one egg per five hens daily while fresh eggs sold for up to 75 cents a dozen.

Bethlehem Steel Chief Says No Profit in War Ship Output
Eugene G. Grace of Bethlehem Steel argues that building sixteen inch guns and related ships at cost serves the nation. He notes past losses on armor piercing shells and proposes building two battle cruisers in government yards with Bethlehem ships completed at cost, without extra commissions.
