British steamer crew reports sinking a German submarine about 400 miles off the Irish coast after firing a shell into the U boats magazine. The craft exploded in the middle and broke apart with parts sinking separately while the British ship arrived unharmed at an Atlantic port.
The government presented testimony in a federal court trial involving 51 individuals and 102 companies in coal production. It described price lists fixing $8 per ton at the mine as part of a January conference between coal presidents and operators.
June reports say the British front in northern France is active with raids from Belgium to St. Quentin. On the Aisne front infantry fighting has a lull, while French forces have virtually regained most ground lost to the crown prince's army last week.

Charles Egenroad Jr. of River Avenue is reported suffering severe leg injuries after a dog bite in West Goshen on Saturday. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Egenroad.
Four year old Margaret Marshall daughter of Dr Augusta L Marshall of Indianapolis was struck and killed on her birthday as she stepped from her home to invite a playmate to her party.
Expert surveyors from Indianapolis and local officials will inspect the Bristol to Elkhart road built by W. W. Hatch & Sons Co. The dispute centers on payment and gravel quantity with over $2,000 due and arguments over whether the road meets specifications. The survey results will inform the county commissioners at their next session.
17 year old Eli Hart was shot and killed in a family incident involving his brother. Police have not released all details while investigators review the case. Hubert Reed is named as the reporting source.

Mrs. Howard Spaulding of Chicago formerly Miss Catherine Barker of Michigan City donated 2090 to the Michigan City Red Cross fund. Reliance Mfg Co of Michigan City added 1000. In South Bend Red Cross memberships range from 25 cents to 2500 as subscriptions continue.
Equipment previously stored at the National Dairy Machine Co. plant near Wilkinson Street along the railroad has been relocated to the company’s main factory.

George Stauffer aged 32 a Mennonite who opposed bearing arms killed himself at Decatur Indiana by shooting himself with a shotgun. Neighbors said he feared being drafted into the army.
Carrie Herr, 11, daughter of H. J. Herr of Lafayette, walked in her sleep and fell eighteen feet. Doctors report she will recover and she is in stable condition at home.

Adam Burkett of Pittsburgh was attacked Saturday evening near the Rock Run foot bridge by two unknown men who demanded a match then struck him and robbed him of about four dollars a gold watch and other valuables. Bystanders carried him to North Ninth street. officers and neighbors searched the area but found no trace of the assailants.
Reports from Elkhart county growers show a large potato crop despite frost claims. Goshen and surrounding gardens yield high output with potatoes likely under 1 dollar per bushel. Fruit prospects also strong with strawberries at 1.25 per case and peaches apples pears and plums promising well. Vegetables expected to stay reasonably priced due to abundance.
Capt Deal Lieut Baron of Co BH Elkhart and Corporal Laughlan recruiting officer announced a recruitment campaign. A recruiting party will visit next Thursday. Goshen’s Co E may muster into federal service, the only volunteer unit from Elkhart County expected to see early war service.
John Hawks paid 11 dollars this morning after being charged with speeding in the south city section. Officer Alva Kindle said Hawks rode 28 miles per hour. An Elkhart motorist was stopped yesterday by Officer Kindle and ordered to appear in city court for driving about 75 miles near the Bag factory. The officer says he knows several other locals alleged to have violated the speed limit over the weekend.
At 3 pm it was unclear how much Goshen had contributed to the Red Cross $100,000,000 fund. The $5,000 local share is believed to be raised. The contributions committee will check tonight and publish a detailed report tomorrow with all contributor names.
The Woman's Franchise league of Goshen arranges a special music program for the Olive Belden Lewis meeting at the First Baptist church tomorrow night. Vocalists Mrs Edwin Stout and Royal M Woolpert will perform several selections. The public is invited without an admission fee.

The last week of the May term of the circuit court began in Goshen with cases scheduled. After next Saturday no court until fall term opens October 1. A jury to hear James Hay versus Michael Hay for guardianship Friday. foreclosures and estate actions noted including sale of land for 400 dollars and quiet title proceedings.
Mrs Mabel Mae Bolhuis 28 wife of Dr J A Bolhuis Elkheart chiropractor died in Augustana Hospital Chicago after an operation. She was not believed seriously ill before the trip. Survived by husband parents Mr and Mrs Henry Coburn Alma Michigan one son one daughter one sister and two brothers. Funeral services were held at Elk Hart this afternoon.
Cripe and Seaman will finish the New Paris brick road this week, three miles long, then begin the Middlebury road from Goshen. The Northern Construction Co. of Elkhart is also making excellent progress on Noble county brick highways. Henry Cripe, superintendent of the Ft. Benjamin Harrison road from Indianapolis, was home Sunday.
A bolt of lightning struck a gas main in Elkhart causing minor damage. No injuries reported and crews secured the line promptly.

Fire destroyed the New York Central bridge over the Iroquois river three miles north of Morocco. Strangers seen near the bridge before the blaze led to suspicion of enemy agents. The line carries many freight trains and war supplies. trains are held and detoured until rebuilt.
Joseph Zimmer of Indianapolis, 31, jailed in South Bend on alleged seditious statements about the selective draft law. He is identified as a socialist party organizer.
State Veterinarian Northrop announced the appointment of Dr. W. J. Armour of Goshen as a deputy state veterinarian for the district.
Harry Streeter of Bristol suffered severe injuries yesterday after being struck by an automobile driven by Bruch Moster at the scene.
John W. Young of Goshen aged 24 and Miss Faye E. Rockenbaugh of Millersburg aged 19 were united in marriage.
