Golden Valley County Maintains Lower Tax Levy in 1913

The new Golden Valley county avoids higher taxes despite building a new county system. The 1913 levy totals 12 mills for county operations, with state levies at 4.5 mills and school districts varying. overall county and state levy at 16.5 mills, down from old Billings county's 16 mills. Salaries for 1913 include Auditor 1500 and Sheriff 1500 among others.

Suffragette Detained at Ellis Island On Arrival

Washington reports Emmeline Pankhurst will be detained at Ellis Island upon arrival this week until a special inquiry determines if she qualifies as an alien excluded from the United States. Immigrants authorities have not issued detention orders but protests flood the headquarters as officials foresee a global legal battle drawing suffragettes worldwide.

Frightful Engine Accident Near Golden Valley

Hebron Oct 15 A frightful accident near Golden Valley last Friday killed a young man from Texas who served as a fireman. The traction engine detached a separator, rolled downhill after a gear pin failed, and the victim was crushed beneath a rear wheel. Helpers dug in front of the wheels and moved the machine with horses. The man died instantly.

Two Accidents Mar Week In North Dakota

Two serious mishaps reported this week near Sentinel Butte and north of town left men injured. August Feldman’s foot was mangled in Buffalo Pitts engine gears, prompting amputation above the ankle after he heroically held on to prevent worse. Earl Mason of Sentinel Butte lost most of a hand in a hand saw at Bert Underwood’s shop, with doctors uncertain about saving the thumb or little finger.

Disaster at sea Volturno sinks in gale with 136 dead

Amid a telsic gale the Uranium liner Volturno burned and sank in mid Atlantic. Rescue efforts saved 523, including many aboard the Carmania which stood by eighty miles away. Captain Inch survived. Volturno owned by Canadian Northern and chartered by Uranium.

A 50 dollar silver cup will go to the best bushel of corn and 10 dollars cash to the best five bushels of potatoes meeting standard commercial quality. Only Survivor Found at Custer Reunion Tale From Toledo Man

Frank Fleck of Toledo, claiming to be a Custer massacre survivor, spoke at a Gen. Custer brigade reunion in Ann Arbor. He described leading rear guards, being wounded in battle, and witnessing comrades fall, including Frank Knapp, as they evaded a Sioux attack near the Big Horn and Yellowstone region.

Bankers oppose features of currency bill in congressional hearings

About 35 bankers including N F Banfield of Austin Minnesota and others from North Dakota Montana Iowa and Wisconsin attended the state committee on banking and currency meeting in Washington October 14 to press objections. Banfield urged removing compulsory provisions and extending farm loan terms to five years while criticizing the savings bank aspects and other elements of the administration bill. Congressional leaders urged prompt action with no recess as Wilson and key senators discussed strategy and quorum issues.

New York Governor Sulzer Guilty by Impeachment Court
