Ben Ness is found guilty by a jury in Biemarck North Dakota after a long trial in the state anti bribery case. The panel recommends extreme leniency to the court, asserting Ness acted as a scapegoat while others higher up orchestrated the bribery scheme. Sentencing to occur today.
The attorney describes a witness as a skilled technician and sociable man suited to advance tobacco company interests. He notes Twichell and Diver are not on trial and cautions against overreaching remarks by the defense attorney. Mr Miller delivers a strong plea for the state.
George McClellan stockholder and secretary treasurer rushed into the Beach Chronicle office on a Friday causing a disturbance. He sat in the editor’s chair damaged the typewriter and threatened the postmaster after learning the paper would not print. Officials intervened and he was removed for care, not arrest. He blamed a joke about exposing his past, and alcohol is mentioned as a factor.
In Jamestown Claudia and Bernice Ripley and Mamie Matchie, three girls aged young, drowned in the Shoe River while swimming. Claudia slipped into a deep hole and her sisters perished trying to save her. In Minot Chas Miller, a bachelor farmer, set fire to his home and barn, then shot himself. no inquest.
Beach outlines Fourth of July plans with executive committee selecting subcommittees for finance music advertising privileges street races free attractions minor sports speaker parade baseball firework decorations water and marshal duties. Funds will be canvassed by the finance group as arrangements proceed.
Former Governor John Burke and Congressman Helgesen are eyed for the North Dakota senate race alongside Senator Gronna and Attorney General Miller. Rumors say Miller will run, with Helgeson possibly entering if Miller does, splitting anti-Democratic support and boosting Burke’s statewide profile.
A Sunday baseball game between Sentinel Butte and the local team produced one of the prettiest //games on the local diamond. Adams pitched splendidly for the locals with solid team support while Churtchlow matched for Sentinel Butte as both sides totaled six hits. Ty Srepeenes smear Beach drove in two runs in the second inning and Sentinel Butte tied it in the eighth before Jefferson homered in the last half to win.
The Fargo Forum reports Beach is the largest primary grain market in the U S with 1 284 cars shipped since August and over 100 000 bushels stored in local elevators bringing total marketed to above two million The Minneapolis trade tour highlighted Beach with Rus sell Miller 100 000 bushel elevators and a planned flour mill The visit included a tour of hilltop districts a band stand and a party led by Beach Comercial club president J P Smith with John Rossiter and John B Gillillan joining, plus schoolchildren and teachers Nell Holsey and Katherine Lee.
Medora North Dakota May 27 A miner or hunter named Jack Nevens found an earthen pot in a cave near an old Indian camp about a mile east of the ranch. The gray vase stands about twelve inches high with a rounded egg-shaped bottom and scalloped rim. The maker’s finger marks show on its surface and the walls are uniformly thin. It appears to have been used to preserve fire and its age is unknown. Northern tribes are not known to have forged pottery locally, though Nevada and New Mexico groups did. The discovery remains a relic of mystery and value.
An opening in the fence let a fielder recover the ball and hold a runner at second. Pitchers repeatedly escaped danger with strong work making the game exciting throughout. Beach led late as Captain Smith delivered a key hit in the fourth inning driving in runs, while Sent and Butte battled to the end.
In New England North Dakota twenty one stolen horses have been located by Sheriff Doten of Hettinger county and Deputy Davis of Harding county. The horses were part of a larger rustling network moving stock from South Dakota to nearby markets. Local farmers who bought horses in good faith are being reimbursed as officials continue to recover missing mounts.

Mrs Briley Douglass died last Monday night at her Carlyle area home after months of illness from heart trouble. She leaves a husband and two daughters. The family moved from Indiana to the Golden Valley six years ago. Funeral services were held in Carlyle on Wednesday at 11:30 with Rev Bovee officiating.
