Tragic House Fire Kills 12-Year-Old Hugh Elder
A Tuesday morning fire in a North Hunter Street tar paper shack claimed twelve year old Hugh Elder, son of Mrs. J A Elder, as the house burned after an explosion from a gasoline stove. Mrs Elder and her other son Ross escaped, while Hugh perished under his mother’s bed as flames enveloped the building. The family, recently from Black River Falls Wisconsin, lost all belongings with only partial insurance on the structure, and a $170.60 fundraising drive helped support the mother and remaining relatives while they travel for the funeral.
