Beach County Fair Dates Set for September 23 26

Beach will host a county fair this year with dates September 23 24 25 and 26 chosen after a town meeting of about fifty residents. An executive board led by J W Waters and T L Smith will run the event with a finance group tasked to raise $2000 to fund the fair.

Former Editor Metcalf Faces Legal Trouble in San Francisco

The former publisher James A. Metcalf of Dawson County Review is pursued by his wife in San Francisco over an accounting of property she alleges he managed years ago. He was served on arrival and must remain to defend the action as efforts to end the publicity fade.

Callender Hotel Changes Hands

Ed Fillner of La Crosse Wisconsin becomes owner of the Callender hotel in Beach. Possession was given Monday. Fillner, an experienced hotel man, will run the popular establishment as before with his wife and family joining him to make Beach their permanent home. Mr Callender and family will remain in Beach to oversee other valley interests.

Banquet Honors Longtime Northern Pacific Chief Elliott

Nearly 300 Northern Pacific employees and officers gathered August 9 at the St Paul Hotel for a farewell banquet to honor Howard Elliott after a decade of leadership. Preceding events included dinners hosted by the University Club Saint Paul Minnesota Club and the St Paul Association of Commerce as colleagues saluted his move to New England.

Want Court At Dickinson On August 1st

Senator A J Gronna introduced a bill in Congress to amend the U S judicial code so as to permit federal terms of court for southwestern North Dakota at Dickinson on the second Tuesday of June Each year The southwestern division would include Golden Valley Billings Bowman Adams Hettinger Stark and Dunn Morton Oliver and Mercer would be in the southern division and go to Bismarck for U S court work Williston would host court the fourth Tuesday in October for McKenzie Montana Divide and Williams counties The bill is referred to the judiciary committee and may not pass this session due to tariff work.

Election Called To Vote On Commission Form In Beach

Beach voters will decide whether to adopt the commission form of government in a special election set for September 9. A petition with nearly 100 signers prompted the council to schedule the vote after reconsidering the required 10 percent threshold. Election officers named include J. P. Smith as inspector. E. E. Salzman and A. O. Whitney as judges. Theo Maannini and W. B. Artis as clerks. The fire hall will serve as the polling place.

Yates Man Dies After Wibaux Auto Crash

John Davis of Yates died from injuries after a car skidded on a muddy road two miles east of Wibaux. Ralph Adamson, driver, with Frank Diebel and Peter Kramer of Yates, were passengers when the vehicle rolled, throwing them about. Davis struck his head and died en route or at Dickinson hospital. Davis worked as a bartender at Yates.

Hail Storm Ravages Valley Crops In Northeast Sweep

One of the worst hail storms in years struck the valley yesterday afternoon, destroying grain fields from the Lame Steer district near W. A. Sprague to J. E. Arnold east of town. The damaged strip spanned three to five miles, with insured losses reported at 100 percent for some. The Burke Insurance Loan agency notes heavy losses among insured companies and adjuster T. M. Lee was on site. Dozens of named residents suffer losses, marking a second major hail event this year.
