Residents report hailstones the size of baseballs causing thousands in damage to roofs and autos around Glen Rose. The piece also previews the July 3-5 Round-Up at Dinosaur Downs with mule, horse, and pony races and urges a city-wide clean-up before the July Fourth weekend. A three car collision in Cleburne Saturday afternoon injured three Glen Rose and Fort Worth women and a Cleburne man. Joy Murphy 30 suffered leg injuries. Jeretha Butler 32 head contusions. B L Snider 51 fractured leg. Louis Carranza lacerations and chest contusion. Chapman of Granbury, driver of the northbound car, was uninjured. All treated at Memorial Hospital and reported as doing fine by press time.
J. M. McCroskey reports four faculty vacancies and one bus driver post at Glen Rose Schools. Resignations include Mrs. Boyce Gatewood and Mrs. Nita Pickens of Cleburne and Mrs. Glen Galloway and Mrs. Laurie Moseley III of Glen Rose. Gatewood joined Cleburne, Galloway to Germany, Moseley to stay home awaiting her baby, and Pickens plans undisclosed. Floyd Howeth left the bus position. no new applicants yet.
The Glen Rose Somervell Chamber of Commerce plans a big July 4th Round-Up with events from July 3 to 4. Cake Walk and Little League games start July 3 at 7 pm, street dance at 9 pm, then July 4 features Little Mr and Miss Glen Rose contests, Old Fiddlers, pet parade, armadillo show, and mule and horse races at Dinosaur Downs. The weekend ends with a Junior Championship Rodeo at Dinosaur Arena.
A brief Wednesday hail storm caused extensive damage to buildings, autos, and crops, with hail sizes from pea to baseball. Temperatures spiked to over 100 degrees for five days, peaking at 105. Local observers report 0.65 inches of rain last week and 1.96 inches for the month.
Mayor Gene Connally announced Glen Rose will run a city wide cleanup this week and next to remove debris and improve appearance for visitors. Residents should place trash in street containers for pickup by city trucks, with extra help from Bill Fleming of Rainbow to assist crews before the July 4 round up days celebration.
Floyd Gartrell is listed as recovering satisfactorily at Memorial Hospital in Cleburne after undergoing surgery Monday morning. Family members have stayed with him during and after the operation.
A Pee Wee Instructional Baseball League will be organized here Friday at the baseball diamond for local boys who attended school this past year and are too young for Little League. Managers are Arthur Vine yard Hoot Williams and Paul Schuelke. Boys interested in playing should report at 6 30 p.m. Friday.
Three area youths Jerry Stewart 14 of Thorp Springs James Whitehead 16 of Lipan and Gary Moore 14 of this city pleaded guilty in Juvenile Court. Judges John James and Temple Summers declared them delinquents and ordered each to the Gatesville state school for boys with terms probated until age 21 after admitting burglary at Whitworth Station and Garage.
Auctioneers announce the entire stock fixtures and real estate of the Glen Rose Lumber Co will be sold at auction this Saturday. Inspectors may view the stock fixtures and real estate on Saturday morning before the sale.
Forty two four year olds continue four day sessions Tuesday through Friday in the Headstart program. Friday before July 4 will dismiss for the holiday. After July 11, a week of swimming instruction is planned at Oakdale Park July 15 to 18 with a picnic close to celebrate.
Marilyn Gibbs and Dianna Adams attended a Journalism Institute at Trinity University in San Antonio. Gibbs earned a photography award during the event.
