Tax relief plea caps county tax rolls debate

Dino Club Picnic At Oakdale Park

Senior citizens group Dino Club held a Monday picnic at Oakdale Park with 20 attendees. They shared covered dishes at noon and played '42' and dominoes before lunch.

West Is High Bidder on County Equipment

Charles West of this city was declared high bidder on county equipment offered for sale on a sealed bid basis here Monday. County Judge Temple Summers said that a bid of $1,300 made by West was broken down as follows: Air compressor $300, maintainer $600, and trailer $400.

Big 3 Day Sale Event Sets Tax Roll for Camps

Somervell County Commissioners unanimously vote to add church and non profit properties to the county tax rolls. An order directs the tax assessor to tax fall collections, with church sanctuaries and parsonages remaining tax exempt. Camps run by Methodist Baptist Nazarene, Girl Scout and YWCA are included.

Saddle Stolen At Local Rodeo Saturday

Darrell Stone of Stephenville reported a saddle stolen from his pickup while parked at the rodeo here Saturday night. Sheriff Speck Strawn was notified of the loss and is investigating the theft.

70 Youth Contest in 4-H Club Rodeo at Dinosaur

About 70 contestants gathered Saturday night for the Dinosaur Junior Rodeo sponsored by the 4-H Club Riding Club led by Earl Cromeans. Winners include Mary Lou Cromeans in pole bending 12 18, Cindy Youngblood in 11 under pole bending, Cera Mae Russell in 12 18 barrel racing, Vicky Watson in 11 under barrel racing, and Timmerman Jones in tie down roping among others with multiple placers across events.

Becky Page, a Nemo community student and daughter of Mr and Mrs Oran Page, appeared on Channel 11 Fort Worth Saturday night with the Jimmy Newman Band at Panther Hall. The telecast ran from 6 30 to 7 30 p m and drew a large local audience.

Senior Center Opens in Walnut Springs at Legion Hall

A Senior Citizens Center will open at the American Legion Hall in Walnut Springs Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. A social gathering is planned and all senior citizens are invited to attend this organizational meeting.

R D Kiles of Dallas announces the opening of an automotive repair shop in quarters formerly used by the Robert Gaskill Garage on Highway 67 west. He has purchased a new home now being completed nearby and plans to move his family as soon as possible. He invites the motoring public to visit and try his services.

Community Center to Install Mercury-Vapor Light

Commissioners vote to have Community Public Service Co install a mercury vapor light at the Community Center for public convenience. The automatic light will cost the county four dollars per month, said County Judge Temple Summers.

Rites Held For Charlie Walker 68

Funeral services for Charlie Franklin Walker 68 were held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Mills officiating. Walker died in a local hospital Wednesday of last week and leaves a large family including wife Lois Tidwell six sons a daughter 13 grandchildren and a brother. Burial followed at Post Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers included James Bill and Bryan West Johnny Oldham Chester Raifsnider and Marvin Walker.

Jeff Sirmon Moved to Cleburne Nursing Home

Jeff Sirmon was moved from a local hospital to a Cleburne nursing home Thursday of last week in a Reynolds Funeral Home ambulance. He had been hospitalized for several weeks after suffering a stroke.

Mary Parker Tours with Texas U Group

Mary Parker daughter of Mr and Mrs Cecil Parker of this city joined a Russian Language Tour sponsored by Texas University. The group of five instructors and ten students traveled from London to Copenhagen and will visit several cities including Helsinki and Leningrad before Prague, Brussels and home ending August thirtieth. Parker an honor student and National Merit Scholarship recipient is a sophomore math major at the university.

White Church Sets Reunion on June 22

The annual White Church reunion will take place Sunday June 22 from 9 a.m. to late afternoon. Former residents are urged to bring a picnic lunch to join old friends for an all day gathering with visiting and gospel singing. Lunch will be spread at noon.

The event runs Sunday June 15 from 1 to 6 p m and Monday June 16 from 8 a m to 6 p m with sales by Glen Rose FFA Chapter and FFA Dad s Club. Cowan Dealers from a wide area will display mules dogs housewares and more. Proceeds go to Somervell County Historical Society for museum renovations. Center adopts new policies for county community building

The HD Council committee policy plan for the Community Center was unanimously adopted by the County Commissioners in regular session. No religious services may be held by church groups in the building. Rental fees are ten dollars for reunions and three dollars for individuals or organizations. The committee may spend funds collected from rentals.

Mrs Flynn Honored At TWC Graduation Fort Worth

Mrs Jim Flynn formerly Barbara Hewlett of Georges Creek received Magna Cum Laude honors from Texas Wesleyan College Fort Worth with a major in elementary education. Mother of four, she will teach in Fort Worth Schools next year.
