Somervell Old Settlers Reunion Planned at Oakdale Park

Oakdale Park hosts the first Somervell County Old Settlers and Visitors Reunion with the Somervell County Historical Society. Former residents and visitors are invited for a day of fiddle music speeches picnics tours singing and square dancing. The note also reminds voters of the upcoming Texas constitutional amendments election on Tuesday.

Local Red Cross officials announced two Fort Worth Fire Dept members will travel to Glen Rose tonight to organize free Red Cross First Aid and Rescue instruction. The meeting at Oakdale Park starts at 8 p.m. and enrollment is urged with Glen Rose firefighters attending in a group.

Two Men Escape Injury After Car Submerges in Brazos

Two men, one from Fort Worth and one from Rainbow, escaped death after a 1968 Camaro plunged into the Brazos River Saturday afternoon. Both occupants emerged unharmed, with witnesses aiding their exit from the water and local authorities beginning an investigation into the incident.

A 1958 Ford driven by 18 year old Mike Moreno of Rio Vista crashed into the Hopson home three miles southwest of town on Highway 67 around 10:30 p m Sunday. Moreno faced two charges for driving without a valid license and for driving on the wrong side of the road. He was jailed and fined $40 in Justice Court.

Red Cross Swimming Classes At Oakdale Park

Coach Paul Schuelke reported 122 students enrolled in the annual summer swimming and life saving courses at Oakdale Park pool. Of 25 senior lifesavers, 17 earned certificates. 6 of 9 junior lifesavers also certified. 12 of 13 intermediates and 9 of 11 advanced swimmers certified. 10 of 29 beginners achieved certificates. about 35 preschool swimmers took instruction.

Immunization For Measles Set Aug 16

Dr. Roger Marks announced a free measles immunization program for children age one to 12. The red measles vaccine will be given on August 16 with time and place to be announced. Omega Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority will assist. Parents urged to have their children participate.

Brazos Authority Renames DeCordova Bend Reservoir Lake Granbury

The Brazos River Authority board approved renaming DeCordova Bend Reservoir to Lake Granbury after a petition signed by over 1,300 residents and support from State Rep. Tom Holmes. The dam keeps its name DeCordova Bend Dam as construction nears completion with planned impoundment on Sept. 15 and flood gates remaining open until sufficient downstream flow fills the lake, which will hold about 155,000 acre feet of water and span roughly 30 miles with a surface area near 8,500 acres.

Texas state amendments on ballot August fifth in Somervell County

A special Texas election Tuesday August fifth asks voters to approve nine constitutional amendments. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Somervell County with four courthouse boxes. Amendments 6 through 9 cover bonds interest limits, survivor benefits for public workers, additional student loans, and annual legislative sessions. Local turnout is expected light as officials explain effects and costs.
