Kay Behren Named Home Demonstration Agent Here

Miss Kay Behren of San Saba is appointed Somervell County Home Demonstration agent, replacing Sue Brown who resigned. She will assume duties July 21 after earning a B.S. in Home Economics from Southwest Texas State College, San Marcos. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Behren, she attended local public schools.

Navy trainee John W. Pugh in Dallas program

Airman Recruit John W. Pugh USNR, son of Mr and Mrs Albert S. Pugh of Glen Rose, is in Dallas at the Naval Air Station for the Recruit Summer Accelerated Training Program. The 8 day course offers quicker advancement than the normal system. For the first five weeks he will receive training akin to a regular Navy recruit.

Heavy rains soak region as Paluxy and Brazos rise

Slow soaking rains blanketed the area from early Saturday morning through afternoon with 2.57 inches measured on the official gauge. The statewide rainfall ranged from two to four inches across the county, boosting river flows and marking a year-to-date total of 15.38 inches. Some peanut growers lamented rain delays to germination.

Snake disrupts power at S G Bright home

S G Bright of Nemo reported a power outage to the REA after a four foot chicken snake climbed a 30 foot pole and touched a high voltage line, causing the transformer to trip. The reptile was killed and the Brights lost electricity briefly while workers restored service.

Rumph Family Relocates to Glen Rose Area

Mr and Mrs Thomas G Rumph Jr and children Ruth Ann and Kavin moved to the GR Ranch near Glen Rose on the Tolar Road after selling their Fort Worth home. Rumph is an attorney based in Fort Worth and will commute. The children will attend Glen Rose Schools this fall.

Registration for Red Cross swimming lessons opens at Oakdale Park at 8 a.m. Monday. Four two week sessions run Monday through Friday with classes for beginners advanced beginners intermediates and life saving. Fees waived for students funded by Red Cross. only pool entry charges apply.

County Clears July 4 Without Accident

Holiday death toll in the nation through midnight July 4 totaled 640 with Texas at 67 as celebrants clogged highways. Glen Rose and Somervell County were lucky to escape death or accident during a weekend of four big celebratory days. Local law enforcement praised residents for a safe holiday period.

Parade and Rodeo Reset for September 2 in Glen Rose

Rain halted the July 4th Round-Up opening events. The Somervell County Livestock and Poultry Association and the Glen Rose chamber postponed the gala parade and junior rodeo to Saturday before Labor Day, September 2, as full weekend plans could not be rescheduled. A gospel session, street dance, and a busy museum and art show followed, with fiddling contests drawing about 1,000 spectators from multiple states. The Pet Parade drew crowds on Tuesday, aided by local club sponsors and prizes from 60 firms, capping the holiday with a Pony League game between Glen Rose and Granbury.
