John J. McCown Dies in Interstate 20 Wreck

John Jay McCown 48 of Abilene formerly Glen Rose died in a highway accident Sunday night April 12 when his 1963 auto smashed into a bridge railing on Interstate 20 ten miles west of Abilene. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Glen Rose Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Glen Rose Cemetery. Survivors include his wife four sons a daughter his mother sister and a step daughter.

Methodists Favor Remodeling Of Local Church

The Fourth Quarterly Conference of the First Methodist Church approved the building committee plans for an extensive repair and remodeling program directed by McLure Co of Fort Worth. The project, estimated at about 26000 dollars, will mainly remodel the church with some work on the parsonage and Fellowship Hall. Reverend Bruce Baker confirmed the cost and scope as plans move toward completion in a few weeks. Patsy Flanary visited Fort Worth Monday for a medical check-up.

Mike Norman Receives High School Diploma in Midland

Mike Norman of Midland earned his high school diploma through correspondence from Texas Tech at Lubbock. Principal Charles Gibbs presented the diploma to a 1963 class member who spent the weekend with his parents Mr and Mrs Jim Normezn.

Cemetery Working Set at White Church

The Reporter announces a cemetery working at White Church on Saturday April 18. Those attending are asked to bring lawn mowers and tools to help clean the plot. Delwin Spencer has been released from a Cleburne hospital.

Clifton Wins Junior High Track Meet Here Friday

Clifton dominated the Junior High district track meet held Friday afternoon with 4914 points. Joshua and Glen Rose followed, while Itasca and Alvarado also scored. Bob White led the meet with high jumps and sprints. Freshman meet saw Clifton win with 6514 points and Gen Rose second.

Grand Jury Empaneled to Probe County Shortages

Som ervell County officials await Grand Jury findings after an audit shows a 22791 shortfall in the Bone era office largely from vehicle licenses. Sheriff Bone has been missing since March 31, while the court transfers frozen funds to interim Sheriff Parker and approves bonds totaling 26000 for him.

Six Local Students Win Regional UIL Literary Berths

Six local high school students qualified for the regional UIL Literary meet in Denton on April 21 after district wins at Waco last week. Contestants include Ronnie Shackelford Persuasive Speaking Pam Gibbs Extemporaneous Speaking Charlotte Wood Shorthand Ready Writing Roger Armstrong Mary Parker Number Sense and Chuck Gibbs Slide Rule. Charlotte Wood finished second in Ready Writing Betty Ann McCroskey placed fourth in Shorthand and Chuck Gibbs took second in Slide Rule.

Two Local Men Escape Injuries in Car Crash

John B. Davis and Arthur M. Cantrell, both residents of this city, escaped injuries after their cars collided at the intersection of First and Bryan Streets Wednesday afternoon of last week. City marshal Danny Smith said both vehicles were damaged, about $220 in all.

Charlotte Wood Wins International Honor

Glen Rose High School senior Charlotte Wood has earned a certificate and gold charm from the International OGA Shorthand Penmanship Exhibit for a qualified shorthand entry. She placed second in shorthand at the district meet in Waco and will compete in the regional meet at Denton on April 24 in shorthand and ready writing.

Father of Local Lady Buried at Hico

James Martin Creek 80 of Meridian laid to rest in Hico Cemetery after services at First Baptist Meridian. He died April 7 following a stroke. Born Livingston Tennessee he lived in Meridian 12 years after moving from Hico. Survivors include wife two daughters son and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
