Memorial gifts to Gladewater library honor Mrs Ray Bumpus

Memorials were presented to Gladewater Public Library for Mrs. Ray Bumpus. Gifts came from the Bowdens Beavers Swearingen and Schnopskie families. Also listed are dog sale offers and local visitor notes including Steve Lawless and family, and Patsy Weston’s hospitalization.

Crime Rate Up in 1971 First Half Says Mitchell

Attorney General John N. Mitchell reports a seven percent rise in serious crime in the first half of 1971, with violent crime up eleven percent. He notes 50 cities over 100,000 residents reduced violent crime, Washington DC showing a 16 percent decline. FBI figures cover seven major crimes and include rising robberies and burglaries, plus a spike in auto theft.

Sales Tax Receipts Show Increase in City Revenue

The city reports a rising flow of one per cent sales tax receipts. From Sept 30, 1968 to June 30, 1971 total receipts reach 195,413.54 with a quarterly check of 22,200.12 for the quarter ended June 30, 1971. The 1970 quarter totaled 17,911.07, up 4,289.05 this year. annexation across the Sabine River not yet included.

Early arrivals set up camping on Ambassador College grounds as the 19th annual World Wide Church of God Fall Festival gets underway Sunday October 3 and runs through Monday October 11 with two large camping areas already occupied.

Highway Loop 485 Plans Begin in Gladewater

The Texas Highway Department starts preliminary plans for Loop 485 from U S 271 and Pine Street to U S 80. The corridor route would run behind the Middle School area and include a four lane facility with medians and shoulders. Maps and environmental studies are on file in the City Manager's office for public inspection.

Clarksville City Wins Grant for Water System Upgrade

Rep. Ray Roberts announces a federal Environmental Development Agency grant increase of 43,930 dollars to Clarksville City, totaling 64,150 for water system development. A direct loan request of 47,000 was paused by the Texas Water Development Board awaiting a Texas Attorney General ruling on loan definitions. Pinewood Lake Loma capacity and regional church attendance projections are noted for a 12 state region, with 4,000 expected motel and hotel stays and 1,500 in private housing.

Edge Named to ET Baptist College Development Board

Leroy Edge of Gladewater, a former East Texas pastor and Carthage native, joins East Texas Baptist College development board. He is a 1940 Carthage High School graduate and first ETBC graduate with senior college status in 1944, now with Leroy Edge and Associates in Gladewater. He is married to Geraldine Thompson and has three children and two grandchildren.
