Homicide rise in New York City first half 1971

New York reports a 30.1 percent rise in homicides for January through June 1971 from a year earlier. Dr Milton Halpern notes Manhattan led with 389 murders, Brooklyn with 388, totaling 714 nationwide. Most victims were Negro. William Ernst earns Boy Scout Eagle in Port Arthur Texas.

Three Die In Wreck Sunday on Tyler Highway

A four-vehicle crash near Gladewater left three dead and a fourth injured. Victims were Robert Green and Leroy McGinnis of Winona and John M. Lee of Tyler. Odis Stewart of Tyler survived and was hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Funeral services for Lee, Green, and McGinnis were announced with arrangements by Brooks Sterling, Turner, and McCauley funeral homes.

Local Resident Electrocuted Sunday Near Drilling Rig

Clarence Alexander Miller 36, longtime Gladewater resident, died Sunday afternoon from an electrical shock at a drilling rig site near the city. Native of Arkansas, funeral services were held Wednesday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Herman Reagh officiating. Graveside rites planned Thursday at Kilbourne City Cemetery in Louisiana. Survived by wife Antonia, two sons Clay and Billy, four brothers all in Gladewater, three sisters in Marion Kentucky, mother Sybil Miller.
