Gladewater hosts Athens Hornets at Bear Stadium in an 8 p.m. Friday game. The item notes a heavy rain day affecting local activities including a welding helmet worn by Nelda Martin during storms and a police report about a lost Basset Hound.

J. B. Poston was chosen Commander of George Martin Post No. 281 at a Monday meeting in the Legion Hut. Also elected were R. A. Herbst first vice president H. N. Preston second vice president Mark J. Thomas adjutant R. A. Heard finance officer B. A. Ussery sergeant at arms Jim Holcomb historian R. L. Addington service officer Clarence Lee chaplain. A special meeting was set for Monday Sept. 17 at the Hut.
City officials approved applying for a 445000 airport expansion grant funded 75 percent by federal sources and 25 percent locally with 50000 requested from the state. They also authorized landfill data submission and approved a 1866 addition for Gregg-Harrison Mental Health Center.
W. T. Murphy of Paris first governor of Rotary District 583 will visit Gladewater on Thursday September 20 arriving September 19 with his wife Patti. He will meet directors at 5 30 pm and suit up for a 6 30 pm club assembly at the St. Clair Restaurant. Rotary Anns will host a reception at 6 30 pm at Mrs Jess Turner home. The official visit will be the noon meeting on Thursday marking the district 583 debut in Gladewater. Murphy chaired multiple Rotary roles and runs several businesses including lumber building and ranching enterprises.
Postmaster Roy Pynes announced a new Stamps by Mail option for the Gladewater area starting Monday September 17. Customers can buy stamps and stamped envelopes by mail with checks or money orders, benefiting shut ins and busy residents. Leaflets will be distributed with details. A 40 cent fee will cover two way postage and processing costs. Weather notes report heavy rainfall in early September with 6.7 inches between Sept 1 and 14. Lake Gladewater sits about 3 inches above spillway.
The Upshur County commissioners approve Architect Leland A. Guinn’s plan totaling 429,280 to renovate the courthouse and remodel the jail. Plan A covers jail gutting, elevator and stairs, courtroom work, plumbing, electrical, and more. Plan B adds drives, painting, acoustics, air conditioning, rewiring, and lighting.
