Gladewater Chamber Endorses Hospital Committee Action

The Gladewater Chamber of Commerce endorsed action by Hospital Administrator Bill Wagner the hospital board and medical staff to organize a committee seeking more doctors for Gladewater. Royce Ford spoke on an ad sponsorship. about 400 attended the Tennis and Swim Club open house. profits fund chairs for the Chamber building. Plans for the Christmas parade and World Wide Church of God Festival Oct 10 18 were noted. Student Government Day was proposed.

Union Grove bond passes by nine votes

Union Grove Independent School District voters approved a $280,000 bond by an unofficial margin of 138 in favor and 129 against. Superintendent R. A. Cooper reported the result and said the canvass will occur at the next school board meeting on Monday, Sept. 17. The bond funds will finance physical improvements and expanded facilities at the 90 year old school.

Gladewater Man Dies After Gladewood Shooting

Jack Day Baggett, 43, died from a chest wound after a Tuesday evening shooting. Police say he was struck once by a .22 caliber pistol and arrived at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview at 11 p.m. His address is listed as Route 1 Box 93 A in Gladewater.

Central Freight Lines plans to expand service to Gladewater

George L. King of Central Freight Lines told Chamber directors the company will seek Railroad Commission approval to extend intra state freight service to Gladewater, after already serving Longview and nearby cities. He urged accurate shipment date recording and warned petitions alone are not highly effective.

Group works to recruit doctors for Gladewater hospital

A 22 member committee met at Municipal Hospital to plan recruiting new physicians for Gladewater. Hospital administrator Bill Wagner outlined aims while Dr S M Thomas urged staff and laymen to suggest ideas. Urgent needs include obstetrics gynecology internist and a surgeon from Longview or Tyler. ICU and 24 hour ER coverage were emphasized as crucial needs.

Harold F. Richardson 63 Dies After Sudden Illness

Harold F. Richardson 63 of Gladewater died Monday in a Tyler hospital after a sudden illness from a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Grace Hill Cemetery Longview. Survivors include his widow Velma, two sisters Helen Curtis Tulsa and Grace Darvie Fort Collins, his mother Sue Richardson Gladewater, and several nieces and nephews. He worked in oil before becoming an independent operator and helped buy Gregg Refinery with C. R. Starnes et al. He was a Tulsa University graduate and attended the New Mexico Military Institute.

Gladewater Board Handles Staffing and Boy’s Football Grievance

Gladewater school board met in regular session approving several new teachers and addressing a protest by parents over a boy denied permission to join the football program. Ike Liddell and others urged reconsideration, while Supt. Johnson and board President Shipp explained the meeting must be conducted as a group. The panel also discussed pool repairs and a $14,000 estimate for a new filter system, with plans to work with the city and use Gregg County funds as available.

Bears Ready for Open Date After Week One Victory

The Gladewater Bears defeated Gilmer 28 25 to open the season and will have an open date this week. Next Friday night September 21 they travel to Athens to face the Hornets. GHS JV goes to Daingerfield Thursday for a 7 p.m. game and the eighth and ninth graders host Judson with games at 6 and 7 30 p.m.
