The White Oak City Council approves a budget of $317,668 for the new fiscal year starting October 1. Major item is $100,530 for bond payments on the water and sewer system. $57,668 comes from revenue sharing funds.
The Glade Tennis and Swim Club Inc unveils a new seven acre facility at Allison and College Streets near Highway 80. A ribbon cutting by Mayor O G Johnston with club president Jerry Williams and directors marks the Sunday open house from 1 30 p m to 6 p m.
Mack Wallace 43 of Athens, named by Gov. Dolph Briscoe to fill the unexpired term of Byron Tunnell on the Texas Railroad Commission. He vows to study the agency, cites its oil industry role, and notes the $34 000 annual salary. Wallace says he aims to learn quickly and serve fairly while acknowledging the commission’s impact on Texans amid the energy crisis.
Middle School Parents Aid will hold a Thursday meeting at 9 30 a m in Mr Kings office to elect officers and plan the coming year. All parents with students at the middle school are asked to attend.
The Gladewater Mirror chronicles city council minutes and reports detailing the efforts to bring a television cable to Gladewater. Stan Sooia Soda Inc began work installing steel strand for the cable as four franchises and nearly a decade of delays factored into the project.
Services for 68 year old Mrs Wardie W Elkins were conducted at Malcom Stone Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Gladewater Memorial Park. She died Thursday at Municipal Hospital after a long illness. Survivors include her widower E M Elkins and two sons Hubert and Lloyd Elkins, six grandchildren, and four sisters. The Rev Conrad Winborn officiated.
A 22 member physician recruitment committee was named by Gladewater Municipal Hospital to attract new doctors. Dr S M Thomas chairs the board with hospital staff and nine representatives from various fields. A 7 am Tuesday breakfast in the hospital dining room will outline plans to address the local doctor shortage and maternity care needs.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department announces 11 district Information and Education Division offices. Executive director Clayton T. Garrison says officers will bring conservation messages to residents in cities and metropolitan areas and meet the public in recreation areas to influence attitudes toward natural resources.
The city unveiled a new five seat van type ambulance costing 8750 dollars. It seats four adults and a child, features two way communications, oxygen and aspirator equipment, inflatable splints and back boards. Fire Marshal Harold Potts notes it will speed patient treatment and that nine regular and several volunteer firefighters are trained to operate it.
