City approves 6.2 mile East West Lake Drive paving project

The Upshur City Council approves asphalt paving for 6.2 miles of East and West Lake Drive after a lengthy session. They authorize a $100000 time warrant at 4.75 percent interest, estimate total project cost at about $104275, and plan work to start mid September with completion possible in 20 working days. An agreement with Upshur County to swap equipment for fire protection services could save $7000 to $9000.

Bears outclass Brahmas in second half comeback

The Gladewater Bears rallied in the second half to topple the Paul Pewitt Brahmas on their field after a scoreless first half. Gladewater Arts and Crafts Festival Scheduled for Sept 25 26

Gladewater hosts its third annual outdoor arts festival at Broadway School grounds near Highway 80 East with booths from 20 cities in three states. Janice Walker chairs the event sponsored by the women’s division of the Chamber of Commerce, featuring bake sale by the Gladewater Camp Fire Girls and food concessions by Future Teachers of America. The lineup includes potter Gale Gill, sketch artist Carol Hale, pencil portraits by Jane Pierce, photography, stained glass, china painting, ceramics, dried flowers, leathercraft, rocks and more. Hours run 10 a.m. to dusk Saturday and noon to dusk Sunday, with lunch served both days.
