Kilgore Community Concert Association reminds members that the Glenn Miller Orchestra at Tyler Caldwell Auditorium Thursday night is open to season ticket holders. The item also notes local events from a Punt Pass and Kick zone to bake sales and club pledges at Baylor University and community notices including hospital updates.
Gladewater board hears a 495 pupil Gay Avenue report showing growth likely to require another class per level. Four portable classrooms, a fifth partial space, and a 20 year old building drive need for a master plan and possible leased portable units.
Postmaster Allen Rich reports ongoing vandalism at the Gladewater post office including dumped waste, broken lock boxes and pilfered display boards. He notes patrols increased, a 12 year old and a younger accomplice tied to hang from a collection box, and warns destruction of government property and tampering with mail boxes are federal offenses.

The Longview Country Club schedules its first annual invitational golf tournament for Oct 1–3 on the club course. 128 players max, $40 entry, 54 holes with shotgun starts, with prizes for top four in each flight. 8:30 am and 1 pm starts. course closed on meet days. includes a barbecue.
Saturday event brings top ten riders from Central Texas Tri County and East Texas Horse Show Associations to Gladewater rodeo grounds for 26 events. Competition starts at 1 p.m. with 29 trophy sets. Local qualifiers from East Texas include Gladewater and 10 nearby towns in events such as Western Pleasure Poles Flags Cloverleaf and more. Most participants arrive Friday for a weekend of riding.
Gladewater Bruins visit Bear Stadium for a high potential class AA showdown with DeKalb. Rhett Darnell leads the Bears, backed by speed on offense and a stout defense, while Gladewater seeks another upset after consecutive wins.
Funeral services for the Rev. James W. Kilpatrick were held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Center. The 44 year old former St. Mark's vicar was found stabbed to death in a Minneapolis hotel room while attending the General Convention as an observer. A 17 year old suspect is in custody. Kilpatrick, a 1958 Seminary of the Southwest graduate, had ties to East Texas churches and founded St. Michael's and All Angels in Longview. He is survived by his wife Peggy, a daughter Mary Katherine, two sons, his mother and a sister.
Gregg County District Attorney Odis Hill urged commissioners for additional funds including 17 941 for assistant salary increases as the board approved a record 6 236 294 30 budget with a five percent raise for county employees. Hill warned skilled assistants leave after a year. Dallas County salaries exceed Gregg County by 10 000. County Judge Atkinson cited tax limits and other denied requests.
