City council set to tackle heavy agenda Thursday

The council will hear four appearances led by E R Pete McKain and others. Second readings of Ordinances 1088 and 1089 address Lake Gladewater rules and a $100 000 warrant. The plan covers paving 6.2 miles of East and West Lake Drive with bids for asphalt and equipment invited. A zoning change hearing for four parcels precedes new business. Ordinances 1090 and 1091 on planning and subdivision rules also slated.

AARP Meeting and Rebekah Lodge Sale Noted

The AARP will meet Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Ellen Bauman Center to discuss social security with a Longview representative present. Rebekah Lodge members sponsor a cake and ice cream sale Saturday at the lodge hall on S. Dean from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds fund lodge remodeling.

Committee forms to oppose lake road plan in Gladewater

About 70 to 80 residents gathered Sunday at City Park on Lake Gladewater to discuss a proposed ordinance to levy lake lot lease holders for asphalt paving around the lake. The measure faces a second reading at Thursday’s city council meeting. Otis Haley chaired, citing opposition based on his view of the plan.

Death probe in Gladewater woman found in bathroom

Thelma Preslar 58 died Tuesday morning in her Gladewater home from apparent natural causes. Police and investigators noted a prior fall and forehead cut not causing death. Autopsy performed in Dallas confirmed natural causes. Funeral arrangements set at First Baptist Church with burial at Gladewater Memorial Park. Upshur County Fire Services Offer Pending City Council Approval

City Manager Tony N Williams says negotiations with Upshur County road construction crews are nearly complete in a plan to exchange fire fighting equipment for county motor graders water and dump trucks and their operators to assist paving East and West Lake Drive at Lake Gladewater. If approved the exchange could save the city 7000 to 9000 in rental costs and restore fire protection to unincorporated areas.

Rotary club calendar sale opens in Gladewater

Gladewater Rotary Club launches its 1977 Birthday and Events calendar sale. President Kirk Abercrombie notes proceeds fund Christmas baskets scholarships a Rotary fellow to Australia and various community projects.
