The Gladewater district Camp Fire Girls board will host the East Texas Area Council annual dinner on November 8. Area officers will be installed for the 1974 year at the event.
The Gladewater area received a heavy rain event from Sept 4 to 5, lifting 1973 total rainfall to 56.7 inches and filling the lake near spillway level. City officials note continued higher water use despite the damp year, with monthly totals from January to August showing persistent wet conditions.
About 100 area council members attend a Tuesday noon dinner and installation at the Camp Fire House North Tenery. Buddy Perryman presided and named a nominating committee to report 1974 district officers at the October meeting. Janice Walker chairs with Joyce Erickson and Joyce Hugman as members.
The Honorable Ray Roberts U S Congressman 4th District Texas will be guest speaker at the Annual Greater Longview United Fund Kick off luncheon on September 24 at the Contessa Inn. Campaign chairman J P McClurkin said the drive for 1973 74 is progressing with enthusiasm.
The Gladewater High Bears faced a strong Texas schedule last season finishing 6 4 0. This year the sophomore loaded Bruins enter a new era with more experience as they confront tougher opponents.
George Smith outlines plans for Woodland Trails a 39 home subdivision north of Union Grove School with one third to three fourth acre wooded lots. The first three bedroom two bath brick home is under construction and utilities will be provided by United Gas Corporation Union Grove Water Corporation. Smith owns GM Forge and Machine and the family operates Flower Barn garden nursery.
Coach Murphy warns Gilmer to bring its best as the Gladewater Bears host the Buckeyes in a high school football showdown. Gilmer's 205 pound fullback Mike Webb and 185 pound tailback William Griffin lead a seasoned offense while Gladewater relies on a platoon system and a tougher schedule. The Friday night tilt follows two tough scrimmages that sharpened the Bears while Gilmer fields a depth-filled lineup under Coach Russell Green.
Ted Armstrong vice chancellor arrived in Big Sandy to kick off the 1973 fall term and welcome the largest entering class. Registrar Lynn Torrance reports 226 new students boosting total enrollment to 510, the highest since 1965. Events included a freshman picnic with faculty and student basketball, a horse show, golf, and a lake barbecue. Classes began Sept 4 with an assembly led by Mr. Armstrong.
