Gladewater Chamber of Commerce will hold a regular semi monthly noon meeting Tuesday at St Clair Restaurant. Royce Ford urges all members to attend and visitors are welcome.
The city council approved two zoning changes and authorized action on land for a 4000 foot runway at the city airport. Mayor Johnston praised airport expansion as key to industrial growth while a 27 500 grant from the Texas Aeronautics Commission was approved with a 90 day matching window. The panel also discussed land purchase or condemnation if needed.
Virgil Edward Kelly 71 of Clarksville City died Wednesday night after a short illness. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Murphy Phillips officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. Born May 25 1900 in Alabama he lived in Gladewater since 1930. Survivors include Bertha his wife two sons Hardy of Oregon Elmer of Carlsbad N M two daughters Mrs D D Key Bakersfield California and Mrs John Mathis Gladewater two sisters Mrs Ethel Keener Midland and Mrs J Vernon Kilgore 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Marilyn Godfrey a kindergarten teacher at Gay Avenue School was chosen for the Texas State Teachers Association state executive committee at the District VIII session in Longview. W C Woolridge superintendent of DeKalb was also elected. Godfrey has chaired District VIII membership for four years and led the 17 county district to 100 percent membership. she is a past president of District VIII.
Mike Jackson co owner of Summit Oaks Achievement Center described a private Laneville Texas program for 80 boys and 16 girls aged 6 to 18 from Illinois and Louisiana. He noted costs of about 6000 dollars per child yearly and said facilities fill a gap for emotionally disturbed and mentally retarded youths when home states lack suitable care. He urged Rotarians to consider supervised residences as a midway solution.
A bronze plaque honoring John Ben Shepperd Jr. (1942 1970) was presented to the Gladewater Public Library to join the Texana Memorial Collection. The ceremony featured family members, library officials, and local leaders as the collection grows with more than 1100 donated items, honoring a sixth generation Texan.
S A Hamil 91 a resident of 47 South Main and retired grocer died Thursday night after a long illness in a local hospital. Funeral services were at 2 pm Sunday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Herman Reagh officiating. Burial at Gladewater Memorial Park. Survived by two sons James F E Hamil Overton and J D Hamil McFadin Texas. He was a Presbyterian and 30 years a Gladewater resident.
Fannie H Gandy age 76 of North Lynn Street died Thursday in a local nursing home after a long illness. Born in Corsicana on November 28 1894 she lived in Gladewater 40 years. Funeral at 3 pm Saturday in the Chapel with ministers John Tolen and Billy Grimes officiating burial in Gladewater Memorial Park. She leaves son Theral Gandy of Gladewater two daughters Thelma Kennedy of Gladewater Velma Hendrickson of Grand Prairie two sisters Lillie Winfrey of Bridge City and Bertie Gregg of Port Lavaca eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
