Gladewater Public Library launches a weekly feature in the Gladewater Mirror with local readers, led by Jim Jones, offering reviews of favorite library books each Sunday. The October 2 issue will present his thoughts for all ages, inviting broader participation from the community.
The city council unanimously adopted a resolution shielding city officials and police officers from financial liability in a federal suit filed in Tyler Texas by George Gunter and Jeffrey Lynn Ward. The measure also lets City Attorney Ernest Martin seek counsel for all defendants including Police Chief Cris Morrow and others named in the case dealing with a staged production dispute.

Joseph Cullen Minter Jr. 29 of Gladewater was sentenced to five years in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder without malice in the June 26 shooting death of his wife Joann at her father’s home on Lake Gladewater. Neighbor Grover Knight testified he heard a gunshot and saw Minter leave with the body. Dr. Walter Hart said Minter admitted shooting his wife and transporting her to the hospital. Minter claimed the gun fired accidentally during a confrontation. In a separate note, Patrick G Reynolds, 52, was fined 133 for stealing kitchen items from a department store in Johannesburg.
J B Jackson president of J C Penney Company spoke at a Tyler press conference about plans for new stores in East Texas. Jackson addressed the Sales and Marketing Executives Club after outlining possible openings and company strategy.

Grand Champion Swine went to Paul Copeland with David Beavers as reserve. Poultry Grand Champion was David Beavers, with Paul Copeland as reserve. Ricky Wallace had the Grand Champion rabbit.
