Beige cotton grown near rodeo grounds by Charles McRae

The Mirror notes beige cotton grown by Charles McRae near the rodeo grounds after his sister in Louisiana sent seed. McRae planted two stalks to see the outcome, inviting readers to view the beige cotton. Greer Charlie C dies after 18 month illness

Charlie Calvin Greer 60 of Gladewater died Wednesday after an 18 month illness. He was a pumper switcher for General American Oil Co. Funeral services Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Irby Bates officiating. Burial in Lakeview Memorial Gardens Longview. Survived by wife Edna Lorine a son Charles Owen San Antonio five daughters and several relatives.

Open House Draws 300 Parents To Gladewater Middle School

About three hundred parents visited Gladewater Middle School during an open house on September 30. The event, planned and sponsored by the Middle School PTA, let parents meet teachers and tour classrooms. PTA president Mrs. Billy Calloway looks forward to future meetings.

Gladewater pushes plan to upgrade US 271 with loop

Delegation before the state Highway Commission presented Gladewater plans for improving US 271 from Pine Street to Sabine River bridge. The group urged converting Main and Dean Streets to one way, sought credit for completed work, and proposed a traffic loop linking US 80 and US 271 to handle rising north south traffic. Langford warned land costs will rise. right of way for the loop could top 94 000 with total loop costs undetermined. County aid for outside city limits was noted.

Gladewater hosts the Third District American Legion and Auxiliary convention at Legion Hut on Highway 80 West. Post commander R W Painter announced the one day event with 8:30 a.m. registration and a 1 p.m. luncheon catered by Don's Restaurant. Officials expected include Murray C Marie and Buddie Bounds with Mayor Melvin Jenkins giving the welcome. Mary Lahaie and Al Elliott to attend. Mountain Parkway toll roads deadliest in 1968 with 20.6 deaths per 100 million miles in Kentucky.

New Central Reservations Office Planned at Gregg County Airport

Texas International Airlines and Gregg County Commissioners sign to establish a central reservations office at Gregg County Airport. Initial payroll near 100 workers, rising to about 200 within three to five years, with most hires local and many female. The facility will handle northern system calls across multiple states and cities, and engage local colleges Le Tourneau and Kilgore for training.
