Gov Preston Smith told Longview service clubs that local governments must involve citizens early to solve problems. He cited rising civic support from business, professionals, and academics and praised Longview leaders, appointing Marcus Vascocu to the new 188th District Court at a Rusk County fish fry.
Merchants in Gladewater begin collecting an extra one fourth per cent sales tax Wednesday, raising total to four and one quarter per cent on taxable purchases. The state wide measure, totaling 348 million dollars, also increases a package tax on cigarettes to 4.5 per cent and taxes all alcoholic beverages for the first time since 1963.
A delegation from Gladewater travels to Austin to appear before the Texas Highway Commission at 9 a m on October 1 seeking improvements to U S Highway 80 and Highway 271 on the east side of town. Gladewater High School choir parents meet to plan the 1969 70 term. Choral Director Ken Bennett says the all state choir tryouts will be held Oct 25 at the school. Spaghetti supper set for Nov 4 5 30 to 7 30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The group will also discuss a scholarship and Round Up Rodeo concession participation next summer. The choir will perform at the Texas State Fair Cotton Bowl on Oct 6 at 8 p.m.
Gladewater Rotary Club topped District 58 with a 98.86 percent attendance in August, led by attendance chairman Neil Cooper. Greggton and Longview followed with 97.72 and 97.51 percent, while Kilgore stood ninth at 92.86 percent. The district list shows club names, member counts, and monthly gains or losses.
