East Texas Industrial Group Welcomed by New York Firms

The East Texas Industrial tour was warmly received by top New York firms with 164 executives dining at a Roosevelt Hotel luncheon. Mack Wiley of Gladewater reported by telephone from Detroit that group members included local leaders Quentin Abernathy and city manager. The tour continues to Milwaukee and Chicago before returning to Texas as Wiley joins a Connecticut Edison factory side trip with 24 others.

Bomb damages Texas A&M dorms with no injuries

A homemade bomb exploded at Texas A&M University during a Corps of Cadets assembly, breaking 31 windows across four dormitories, tearing bark from a tree, and gouging a four-inch ground hole. Authorities suspected nitroglycerin though unconfirmed. Texas Ranger and Brazos County deputies joined the probe.

Firemen Win Attendance Award At Jacksonville

Gladewater Fire Department won first place in district Pumper Races for the fourth year. At Jacksonville the event drew 29 observers with Gladewater finishing second. A fire extinguisher was given for attendance. Meetings occur semiannually in district cities. A state pumper race at the Dallas State Fair will involve over 60 teams, with Gladewater planning to enter.

Harding College Dedicates Claud Rogers Lee Music Center

Harding College in Searcy Arkansas dedicated its expanded music facilities naming the center for Claud Rogers Lee and honoring his mother Mrs. Claud A. Lee of Gladewater after a $125 000 gift. The $300 000 complex includes a band room equipment room rest rooms and six practice rooms with new carpeting sound treatment and air conditioning. The program featured performances by the Band and the A Cappella chorus along with remarks by President C L Ganns and music department chair Dr Erle Moore.

Calf Scramble Winners Receive Prize at Glade Round-Up Rodeo

Area 4-H and FFA youths finally got their calves in October after winning at June's Glade Round-Up Rodeo. Winners include David Stone Daryl Ferguson Keith Stokes Dennis Chafin John Watkins Bobby Lynn Walker Joe Watkins Bill Tucker and more. Calves averaging 325 to 350 pounds were distributed by rodeo directors David Moore and Russell Loyd. The youngsters will show at the May FFA Steer Show in Longview and may return next June for another scramble.

Fleming Services Held In Overton
