Suspect in Robbery Charged After Longview Hold Up

Daniel Leon Smith, 33, is charged with armed robbery for the Durham's Grocery heist at 1610 North Main Street. Gladewater police identified him from a car match and six witnesses at a Longview lineup. bond denied, Smith jailed in Gregg County.

Loyalty dinner set at First United Methodist Church

The annual Loyalty dinner will be held Wednesday evening December 1 at 7 o clock in Jeter Hall with a church wide covered dish format. Death of Ben Scrinopskie Ends Longtime Gladewater Businessman Life

Ben Scrinopskie died of a heart attack at Medical Center Hospital in Tyler after years of heart illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rabbi Wolfgang Hamburger officiating and burial in Memory Park, Longview. Born August 1, 1899 in Topeka, Kansas, he moved to Gladewater in 1932 to run the K C Drygoods Store, later opening four liquor stores in 1942 and retiring in 1968. He was a member of Temple Emmanuel Synagogue in Longview. Survivors include his wife Fern, a brother Isador Scrinopskie of Little Rock, Ark., and a sister Grace Dolin of Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

Assault Charges Filed in Shooting at Gregg County Courthouse

Namon Irby of Longview faced assault with intent to murder charges in the Justice of the Peace court after a shooting Wednesday night at the Gregg County courthouse. Two Texas Highway Patrolmen, Don Rawls and Ted Richardson, were involved. Irby was wounded in the exchange and in fair condition at Good Shepherd Hospital. Rawls was struck in the billfold but not injured. Richardson fired several shots, four hitting Irby in the legs. Irby used a .25 caliber pistol.

Basketball Opens Season Here With Bears Versus Lobos

GHS kicks off season Monday with the Bears hosting Longview Lobos in the opener. JV at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m. Coach Bill Waters, in his 22nd year, expects a tough District 8-AAA race and plans a two sophomores start. Gladewater Invitational follows Dec 3-4 with eight teams. Waters notes two rule changes including a five second center court rule and a new center jump rule.
