Gladewater seniors win national essay honor and hunted yields
Four Gladewater High School seniors Galen Gary Karen Hudspeth Cathy Muntz and Dwight Phillips learned their essays accepted for national publication under English IV teacher Larry Osborn. In Upshur county two local hunters bagged deer from the same stand, Max Copeland a 4 point and 14 year old Donnie Ray Brooks a 7 point. Jay Thomp son accuses a person of stealing $90 from his wife’s billfold after a wreck on North Main with $21 found elsewhere. he invites the thief to return.

Theater Building Remains Closed in Longview
City Manager Bill Langford said a certified letter was sent to Sam Tanner owner of the Cozy Theater at 1701 Smallwood Longview. The building was found unsafe for occupancy until it meets fire and life safety codes and could face condemnation. Inspector Potts said no corrective action followed the Oct 1 inspection and power was cut after a request last Friday. A Jacksonville man was arrested for disorderly conduct after an incident involving a portable generator and a window cable. he posted bond. Copies of the letter also went to Allen Gaston leaseholder of the building at P O Box 112 Gladewater and Wilton Beggs of Tyler.

Irene Green Ill Five Months Dies in Upshur County
Mrs. Margrette Irene Green of Gladewater died after a five months illness. Funeral services were held in Gilmer with Del Gage officiating. Burial followed in Martinburg Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters Kathy Mackey and Deborah Kennimer, a son Tommy Flowers, grandson, parents Leonard and Mrs. Green, two sisters, two brothers, and six pallbearers.

Gladewater TSTA TCTA honored Lavon Traughber as Teacher of the Year at their annual banquet in the GHS cafeteria. Garfield Hill announced the nomination, with Traughber teaching 18 years in the Gladewater school system.

Big Christmas parade set for Gladewater crowds
The Chamber of Commerce plans a 4:30 p.m. parade on Wednesday December 1 with seven bands five marching units including Kilgore College Rangerettes nine floats and 13 decorated cars. Prizes total 85 with first prize 50 and special awards for best institutional float. Old Santa will appear in a red sleigh downtown and again December 15.

Mrs Lillie Barton Rites Held In Gladewater
Mrs Lillie Mae Barton 65 longtime Gladewater resident died Monday night after a prolonged illness at Medical Center Hospital Tyler. Funeral services were held Wednesday at First Baptist Church officiated by Rev B F Risinger with graveside rites at Marlin Cemetery conducted by Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. She was born September 10 1906 in Milam County and lived in Gladewater forty years. Surviving husband Dr Barton Sr two sons David Barton Jr of Houston three daughters Maxine Hart of Waco Bobbie Cobb of Houston and Ann Steves of Little Rock Ark eight grandchildren and eight siblings including Mrs Oscar Threlkeld of Jacksonville Mrs Birdie Turnipseed of Waco Mrs Artie Gage of Thorndale and Mrs Tilda Gambrell of Thorndale.
