Schools to Dismiss Early This Week

O. G. Johnson, assistant superintendent, announced that the final day of school will end early. Gay Avenue students will leave at 1 30 p m Thursday, other schools at 2 p m. Report cards will be issued and not mailed.

Rites Held for Mrs Irene Blackmon 39

Funeral services for Irene Blackmon age 39 were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herman Reagh officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. Mrs Blackmon died Saturday at 8 a.m. A housewife and member of First Baptist Church she was born in Nelta Texas and survived by husband Charles a daughter Barbara sister Mrs Claudine Weeks of Dallas brother Hurshel Lane of Houston her mother and step father Mr and Mrs Earl Mears of Gladewater a step brother Bully Phillips of Tyler eight step-brothers and four step sisters Pallbearers were Clembon Bearden Dudley Bearden Johnny Mears Gerald Mears Charlie Mears and Gilbert Dugan.

Chamber approves 19000 budget to hire manager and secretary

President Jack Earp led a regular session approving a 19000 budget for 1976 77 to fund a full time manager Sumpter Reed formerly with Ambassador College was named manager and Mrs Milton Balgiano was hired as full time secretary Reed will start when funds exist with a 9 to 1 office hours and Balgiano from 9 to 4 daily Earp noted dues changes set at 80 per business 15 for retired individuals and 25 for others The group also discussed Christmas decorations and plans for the round up rodeo and city events including May 12 government day and a July 3 fly in with a pancake breakfast.

City to add three new vehicles for Gladewater

Gladewater prepares to receive three new city vehicles after June 1 including a garbage truck a pickup for fire water and sewer use and a police car. The truck costs 39000 replaces two older units and lowers crew to two for one truck. McKaig Chevrolet won the pickup bid at 3570 with Beavers 3709 and Davidson 3663.91. McKaig also won the police car bid at 4706 while Davidson 4894 Beavers 4496.40 and Ford 4706 category notes and Plymouth Fury confusion noted by City Manager Tony Williams.

Gladewater Cable Seeks Rate Increase Review

Gladewater Cable Television requests about a 33 percent raise for residential service, with other increases for bundles. Current rate is 5.95 monthly for the first outlet and a two dollar increase sought. officials will meet with company reps to discuss the request and solicit residents opinions via ecards or letters. The firm reports 45 percent market saturation in the city after two years of operation.

District Attorney urges change in crime laws

Gregg County District Attorney Odis Hill urged Texas lawmakers to revise crime laws to curb rising crime. Speaking to the Gladewater Kiwanis, he highlighted warrant procedures, oral confessions in writing, and parole supervision as areas needing correction. A new booklet Crime Prevention and the Businessman will be available within ten days.

Bears win bi district, loom regional clash for AA title

Gladewater Bears beat Linden-Kildare Tigers 5-1 to claim the AA bi district championship at home. They advance to face the Canton-Rusk playoff winner for the regional and AA crown, with date and site pending. Emmett Lockett earned the win and Meeks, Pope and Lockett contributed key plays.
