Pony League Opens With Bear Park Double Header

The Pony League starts season play with a Thursday double header at Bear baseball park. Gladewater Chamber Plans Rodeo Activities

President Royce Ford led the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce meeting at First United Methodist Church to finalize plans for the Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo. David Holcomb announced 30 beard entrants with prizes of 25 dollars each for longest nearest and most unique beard. beard growers to keep their brush piles until rodeo close. Jim Holcomb said boosters for the rodeo trip on Thursday and Friday are still needed as school ends this weekend.

Gladewater Pools Open Saturday with Class Schedule

Gladewater opens its pools Saturday with Shirley Elliott announcing May 31 as start for swimming classes. Eligibility requires kindergarten completion and a season pass. Classes run May 31 through Aug 27 with varied levels and strict 16-student limits.

City Council Approves Annexation And West Lake Drive Closure

Monday night the council approved an annexation southwest of the Sabine River bridge and two plats for additions west of Rodeo Street along with a third plat outside city limits. A residents petition urged closing West Lake Drive at Harold Street citing speed and safety concerns for 20 to 25 children. Mayor pro tem J. B. Poston paused action on his resignation, and a long range sewer project report was presented amid bond history. West Lake residents also backed study of closing a street in Hall West Lake addition.

Reading program narrows waiting list for summer sessions

Nancy Byrd Mayer describes the summer developmental reading program as enthusiastic with classes filling within a week. Enrollment after close moves to a waiting list and notification of openings. The program features Systems 80 with records films and a simple machine for self paced reading during two sessions from May 31 to July 9 for grades 1 through 7.
