SFYE OPEMERY reports poppy sales by American Legion Auxiliary downtown Friday. Memorial Baptist Church to show film on Wycliffe Bible Translators at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Dr. Sarge Gray of LeTourneau College to speak on spiritual life. charity aimed at Alaska missionaries Clayton and Sharon Thorpe. public invited.
Dr. Allen C. Hancock, Texas College president and Weldon Baccalaureate speaker, will deliver the 3 p.m. program at Weldon Baccalaureate services. Hancock, Cherokee County native, earned a BA from Texas College and master's and doctorate in education from Colorado, was elected Texas College president in 1967 and is married with a daughter Juanita.
Plans for the 32nd annual Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo include eight calves given away over four nights with two calves each night and three calves chased by boys. Eligible 11 to 17 year olds in FFA and 4-H may participate, with calves awarded in October and sold at the Longview sale next spring.
A new sport named Trapit debuts at the Holiday Trapit Course on the western edge of Longview city limits in Greggton. E R McKain of Gladewater announces the grand opening with a 10 am kickoff on Saturday May 24. The game mixes soccer and golf on eight metal traps with par scoring and a kick from a tee area.
Neal Clark, general manager of the Gladewater Mirror, was presented the Friend to Education award by the Gladewater Unit of the Texas State Teachers Association in a ceremony at the high school auditorium. TSTA President Frank Setzler honored him with an engraved plaque for devotion and leadership in education and community welfare.
Gladewater High School hosted Fiesta in the cafeteria with Los Osos Mejicanos as guests. Awards were given in Best Students Most Progress Best Costumes and royalty crowned including honorary members from Kilgore College and the mayor receiving an honorary Los Osos membership. Special thanks to city departments for parade support.
Mrs D L Byrd of 102 E Sabine praised the sanitation department for their pride in work and credited them for keeping streets clean, noting other cities lack of effort to pick up trash behind trucks and urging public credit for the men.
Ray C. Taylor 74 longtime Gladewater resident and Cities Service Oil Co. retiree died at 3 15 a m Wednesday after a short illness. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church and is survived by Grace his wife a daughter Mrs F C Hubener of Shreveport a brother B G Taylor of Jennings Kansas a sister Miss Beth Taylor of Jennings Kansas and four grandchildren. Funeral at 4 p m Thursday at First Baptist with Rev Irby D Bates and Rev J W Best. burial in Memorial Park under Stone Funeral Home.
