Two Gladewater and Union Grove youths named for Boys State

Two Gladewater and one Union Grove high school boys will attend the 1969 Texas American Legion Boys State at the University of Texas Austin from June 7 to 14. David Mecey Russell Abercrombie and Gerald Tucker Jr. will learn state and local government through party organization, campaigns, elections, and law enactment in a mythical state. The program trains youth in citizenship and governance with potential for selection to the national Boys Nation in Washington, D C.

Parade to Kick Off Gladewater Clean-Up Campaign

Gladewater will stage a Tuesday parade downtown to publicize the Paint-up Fix-up Clean up drive. George Thomas chairs the Chamber of Commerce campaign with co chairs Felix Wells and spouse, plus Gladewater and Weldon high school queens Jenny Wallace and Elsie Porter with escorts. Swans in Flight sculpture unveiled at Ambassador College

A bronze sculpture titled Swans in Flight by David Wynne was unveiled at Ambassador College Big Sandy in a formal ceremony led by Chancellor Herbert W. Armstrong. About 1,000 to 1,200 attendees watched Wynne assist the unveiling and speak, with Armstrong, McCullough, and Portune praising the artist and noting the college's arts and publishing efforts. Armstrong predicted future construction and emphasized the institution’s selective admissions and educational aims.

First Lieutenant Jack E Mooney a four award Vietnam veteran and Bronze Star and Silver Star recipient will address the Gladewater Rotary Club at noon Thursday He served with the 9th Infantry Division in the Delta near Bien Hoa and Bearcat and is now part of the Army National Speakers Program He is a former Newsman from Temple and a Bryan native with ties to Temple Jaycees Kiwanis and Sigma Delta Chi
