Chamber Hears Reports and Openings at Chamber Meeting
The Chamber of Commerce meeting featured varied reports from conferences and committees plus upcoming openings. President Mack Wiley and East Texas Chamber chief Quentin Abernathy attended the Governor's Conference on Industrial Expansion in Austin with Texas noted as the fastest growing in the nation. Wiley announced tourism and industry plans, East Texas wins, and previews a Tyler Rose Center luncheon for May 21 honoring retiring Texas Highway Commissioner Jack Kultgen. An East Texas Tourism Conference is set for May 14–15 in Nacogdoches. A new Tourist Development Committee was formed, chaired by Royce Ford with Bill Langford and George Thomas. Clean-up efforts focus on neighborhood conditions. no annual clean-up week date. Two local firms plan grand openings this week on Saturday May.

Gladewater High School will present its annual spring concert on Thursday May 15 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The public is invited with no admission charge. A Band Parents Club reception will follow in the cafeteria.

Mrs. Laschinger Dies In Houston Rites Tuesday
Mrs. Russell H. Laschinger 68 a prominent Gilmer East Texas newspaper woman died after open heart surgery in Houston. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church with interment in City Cemetery. She is survived by her husband Russell Laschinger a daughter and two grandchildren and a brother. Pallbearers included locals and out of town mourners.
