City of Gladewater seeks oil gas lease on city lands
The City Council of Gladewater Texas publishes notice of intention to lease about 20 acres in Upshur County from the Thermas Crenshaw and HW Augustine surveys. Bids due June 8 1972 at 7 30 p m with terms limiting primary term to three years and minimum royalty of one eighth. Surface use excluded except for pooling and directional drilling.

Mississippi kites nest in Abilene State Park
A small number of Mississippi kites or gray hawks nest at Abilene State Park per Texas Parks and Wildlife. Biologists note the species is not on an official endangered list but its population is declining. Park superintendent E C Wisenbaker says a kite was first spotted on April 30 and arrivals vary by only a few days each year. The kite ranges from northern Florida to Texas and Oklahoma and enjoys state protection. The article also mentions the smelt as a relative of trout and salmon living in Atlantic coastal waters.
