Council approves wide range of city projects and contracts

City council discusses water works master plan updates, a Friendship Starrville water contract with rates, sewer completion, landfill site requirements, mineral rights bids, and land purchases. Budgets include lake leases, railroad area parking, and a new police car. Langford to retire June 1.

L A Walker Dies After Short Illness

Luther Albert Walker Sr. 66 of Gladewater died Friday at 3 30 am after a brief illness in a local hospital. Funeral services Sunday at 2 pm in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev B F Risinger and Rev Conrad Winborn officiating. Burial in Memorial Park. He was a retired employee of B F Phillips Petroleum Co born December 26 1905 in Ennis. Survivors include his wife Louise his mother Mrs Clarence Walker two sons L A Walker of Tyler and John C Walker of Lafayette La a brother George Walker and four grandchildren. Pallbearers named George Cummings Garland Smith John Carleton Mack Wiley Melvin Jenkins and E M Wyche.

Gladewater High to graduate 102 seniors in May

Gladewater High School plans 6 p.m. commencement on May 29 for 102 graduates. Valedictorian Mary Jane Wiley and salutatorian Robbie McDonald lead a class including Cathy Muntz Waldleigh as historian, with a long list of graduates such as Vicki Abernathy, Larry Allen, Donnie Barnes, and many others.

Future Teachers honors Galen Gary at GHS banquet

Galen Gary, Gladewater High School senior, received a $500 Future Teachers Association scholarship at the annual banquet in the high school cafeteria. Myrtle Loftis was named Future Teacher of the Year and English teacher Lenora Amos was elected Teacher of the Year. The event featured Channel 7 Tyler personalities Michael and Sandra Brown and presentations by GHS Principal Bob Hill.

Jack Phillips Injured by Falling Tree on West Gay Ave

Jack Phillips was seriously hurt Friday morning when vines on his tractor pulled a tree onto him while he cleared land at his West Gay Avenue property. He was trapped for about two hours before rescuers reached him and he was hospitalized at Gladewater Municipal Hospital with a shoulder injury and cuts.
