Barton Receives Jaycees Distinguished Service Award

Dale Barton of Wyche Drug Company received the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award for 1971 from Chamber of Commerce directors at a luncheon. Barton, 30, chairs the civic division and was selected by Kiwanis Rotary and Lions Clubs. The award came as the local Jaycee chapter is inactive.

Gladewater approves field house at high school

Gladewater School Board in May unanimously authorized a field house at the high school to be built in the park area between the tennis courts and track. Architect Gerald Foster will prepare bids. construction takes about four to six months after bids, with completion aimed for spring sports 1973. The project, funded from existing funds, costs around 100000 dollars and may reduce by in-house work. It provides dressing rooms and showers for boys and girls and supports year round athletic use.

Gladewater school board approves field house and lighting plan

The Gladewater school board approved a new field house and set salaries for nonprofessional staff after executive session. They voted to install four 1,000 watt and 400 watt lights at several campuses, totaling about 192 dollars monthly, to curb vandalism.

Briscoe Dominates Upshur County in Primary Returns

Dolph Briscoe led in Upshur with 3608 votes in a five way Democratic primary. Ben Barnes 1063 Preston Smith 1047 and Frances Farenthold 802 trailed. County totals showed about 6500 votes with one incumbent defeated. Local results noted anti-busing referendum loss and amend ment approval totals.
