Voters in Gregg Upshur Cast Ballots Saturday
Gregg and Upshur County voters head to the polls Saturday for primaries. Gregg County expects about 20 000 voters with 31 722 registered. Upshur lists over 11 000. Absentee ballots totaled 1704 in Gregg with 1419 Democratic in person and 221 mailed. Republican absentee 64 with 37 in person and 27 mailed. In Upshur about 300 absentee ballots cast with some by mail. Voting places include Gregg precinct 13 at city hall and Upshur precinct 16 at American Legion Hut Highway 80 West Round-Up Rodeo Grounds. Election judges named. precinct conventions set for city court room.

Mrs Laura Folsom dies at 79 in Gladewater
Mrs Laura Folsom wife of the late A A Lon Folsom died Monday in a local hospital after several months illness. She was 79 and had lived in Gladewater 39 years. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Edwin Lewis officiating. Burial in Memorial Park.

GHS senior Patsy Floyd won first place in the Gregg County Law Day essay contest receiving a $100 prize and a citation. Second went to Charles Starnes of Longview High School, with Sabine High School also noted, and Steve Pace took third. Presentations were by Justice C. L. Ray Jr. in a ceremony attended by local judges Marcus Vascocu and David Moore.

Public Library refunds tied to Texas price fixing suit
The Gladewater Public Library and other institutions receive refunds as part of a Texas price fixing settlement. Attorney General Crawford Martin says almost $700,000 was recovered from publishers and distributors for schools and libraries. Gregg County districts receive about $4,297.19 split among Arion Grove Sabine Pine Tree and Longview ISD plus the Gladewater library.

Bland dies after lengthy illness at 70
William Fred Bland of Gladewater died Monday night after a long illness in a local hospital. The 70 year old former Texas Co pumper was born July 4 1901 in Milam County Texas. Funeral services were held Thursday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. B F Risinger Jr officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife Ruth a son David Rodger Fort Ord California a brother Ernest Bland Dallas a sister Mrs R W Aschenback Brownwood and three grandchildren.
