A week of banquets speeches and campaigns to prove democracy over communism begins Sunday in Gladewater. The Gladewater Chamber of Commerce sponsors events including church drives luncheons tours clean up and a bond campaign with notable Texas speakers and civic leaders.
The First State Bank of Gladewater opens a new three story marble and granite building Saturday March 19 at 2 00 pm for a public open house. Bank president Ernest O Hearn Jr says the facility features automatic elevator year round air conditioning and modern lighting with participation by banking leaders from Chicago Houston Shreveport Dallas Fort Worth and nearby cities.
Five candidates including two incumbents have filed for two trustee positions on the Gladewater Independent School District board. Incumbents Leon Waggoner and J O Brown join John Osteen Les Long and T M Swearingen as filer candidates for the April 2 election.
C E Penick state director for District 5 of the Texas Frozen Food Locker Association will join locker officials at the State Association convention in San Antonio in March 2023. His brother J L Penick will accompany him plus Gilmer Kilgore Quitman attendees and others from the region. National and state officers will be on the program with elections for the coming year and the event marks a joint meeting with the Texas Locker Association.
The City Equalization Board will begin hearings to equalize tax assessments on city property Monday. Members include Carl Bruce mayor of Gladewater L D Honicutt commissioner and Roy Leggitt commissioner. Assessments cover January 1 to March 15 and public notices have been published. Hearings will be held at City Hall.
Ked Cross drive in Gladewater has surpassed half the $4 200 goal but remains below the mid point with $1 793 18 collected. Drive chairman Les Long says mail contributions slump and several stations report low donations while merchants and volunteers give modestly. He urges timely support as time runs out.
Gladewater Independent School District reports reaching the mid way mark in the scholastic census for the 1948 1949 year. Superintendent E D Cleveland notes every child aged 6 to 18 as of September 1 is to be counted. Three workers canvass homes gathering data as the system expects about 1 872 students this year.
